“MM, I am very uncomfortable with the burka, and one of the things that make me so is that we never saw any, pre-9/11.
American Islam has been getting more conservative, for sure, and that also makes me uncomfortable. In PS, all the Muslim shopowners always sold beer. Now many of them don’t.”
I saw plenty of burkahs here n NYC prior to 9/11. I first saw a woman wearing one here in the 1970s. I don’t necessarily agree with wearing them, but if others want to, I have no problem with that.
And, the Muslim storeowners I know of here in Crown Heights (Yemenis on Kingston Av, for example) definitely sell beer.
The left is trying to frame this argument as a constitutional rights issue,
lol
I find this odd since this administration is trampling all over the states rights on the constitutional issue.
but that’s another argument.
I’m talking about the hypocrisy.
how do you escape it?
lol
here’s 11217 in essence:
“…i’m all for religious expression to it’s full extent,
as long as it’s Islam and not Christianity. ”
yeah, that’ll work.
I find this entire situation to be absurd. Religious freedom is religious freedom. Watch that Olbermann clip. I’m not even a fan of his and I learned a lot.
ENY: The French are LESS tolerant than many nations with regards to cultural influences from outside the country and their impact on France’s own culture. Therein lies much of their opposition to burkahs and to the influences that wide-scale immigration is having on French culture.
This is my thought as well. I really think there is a French “closed-ness”, a circling around French culture, an attempt to keep the foreign influences out. For one, they have an official government committee to review the incorporation of English words into the French language, inventing words to describe things, ala technology, which originated in English language. Also, about language, they don’t value learning other languages. You can say the same about Americans, but Americans are more mesmerized by foreign languages, but the French stonewall against speaking English. (Financial firms operating in the US used to talk about assembling staff on exchange floors to speak French to cater to French institutional investors, so they don’t want to accept English as the language of international business). And it is true about their connections to the Arabic African world which they colonialized which brings more Muslim immigrants to that world.
“If the Mosque is not built Downtown, I think we should close all Catholic Churches within a 1 mile radius of schools or buildings which are frequented by children.”
awesome – lets fight religious stereotypes and intolerance with even more! you’re better than that.

stop the political correctness. please.
I think there needs to be a special police force formed to police who can and who cannot wear a wifebeater or any type of tank top.
It was a joke, DH.

“1. Treating women as chattle
2. Denying the existence of gays
3. Denying the religious expression of others
(try building a Synagogue in Mecca)”
You’ve also just described many in the Republican party in the good ole U.S. of A.

lol , I’m scary?
because I point out that Sharia law as interpreted in countries like Afghanistan, Iran and Saudi Arabia
-denies the existence of gays
-denies women the right to talk to men without consent
-denies other religions their right to worship.
…yeah I’m really scary. 🙂
