As far as “value” is concerned, I like Washington Heights and Inwood. You can get nice big prewar apartments at a fraction of what the West Side goes for and there is this wonderful thing called the A TRAIN. Express into downtown/Brooklyn. Washington Heights also has so much going for it in terms of FOOD. Admittedly it is heavy on the Comida Latina, which is A-OK with me (wonderful, wonderful, delicious CHEAP food).
Just to change pace a little bit, I’d also like to say how much I am loving the meatball discussion, which was really the direction in which this thread was going until I mused about real estate pricing… 😉
I like Won Ton’s recipe a lot. I’ve made something similar with the addition of veal and a little ricotta, and they were pretty good. But I may have rolled the meatballs too tightly. I’ll have to take Won Ton’s advice next time.
I used to live in the Bronx, and while I don’t think it holds a candle to Brooklyn, there are plenty of nice places there. I believe there’s this whole section called Riverdale that has been quite popular for years, not to mention some more ordinary places, especially up near Moshulu Parkway, Woodlawn, Van Cortlandt Park and the Zoo/Botanic Gardens that are really pretty, convenient to transit, etc, etc. Lots of green, nice pre-war apts, some private houses. All worth more than $5.
Ishtar, damn, girl. While blocks like the ones you describe do exist, they are not the norm, at least not in my part of Crown Heights. Nostrand Ave can be a tad filthy, crowded and a bit uncouth at times, but not that bad. I live on a block that is 60% apartments, and it has never looked like that here. Where are you referring to?

Anyone want to buy a car that doesn’t run?
Has a great history.
Hi there, Won Ton!
