The primary reason I moved from Sunset Park was because of the R. I loved it out there. Unfortunately, I had to quickly find an apartment and nothing comparable to what I was moving out of near 36th Street was available immediately.
Also, Nostrand (in CH North) is the second most disgusting stretch of street I’ve ever been on. I wouldn’t walk a dog down that street, especially the closer you get to Atlantic.
I love the vibe up there, Etson. Right near the Cloisters and transportation is so important. Bay Ridge is a totally different vibe completely, but you can’t even compare the two in terms of getting into Midtown. As much as I like Bay Ridge (and Sunset Park for that matter), the R train is a real negative. Whereas, if you hop on the A at 181st St, you are in midtown in 20-30 minutes and to Fort Greene Brooklyn in 40!
Oh boy…someone has something “bad” to say and people want to suggest that you move. That’s hella extra.
If people choose to ignore drug dealers up and down a street most residents need to use to leave the neighborhood, then that’s a serious problem, IMO, especially when you look at property values and rent. Apartments on Franklin ave are renting for well orver $1500 for a 1 bdrm and $3k for a 3 bedrm per month and you have to worry about drug dealers hiding their stashes in your doorways, you have to zig zag across the street to avoid walking through surly looking dudes huddled in groups, and just folks general disregard for their environment in which they live.
I purposefully chose my apartment in CH because I can avoid all this foolishness leaving my house. I can walk toward Empire and never see any of this. Even walking by that awful social experiment called Ebbitts Field.
Good point re Wash Heights / Inwood, donatella. The places at the top of the hill around Ft Washington Ave are the nicest & can still get good deals around there.
I have some friends up there.
“Ishtar, damn, girl. While blocks like the ones you describe do exist, they are not the norm, at least not in my part of Crown Heights.”
Not the norm in my part of Crown Heights, either. But hey ishtar, if CH is not to your liking there are plenty of other places in NYC to live. I’m puzzled as to why you’re living in Crown Heights if you find it akin to “hell.”

Bay Ridge to Manhattan is not too bad if you switch to the D at 36th Street.
I offered ishtar a studio in Kensington but that wasn’t good enough for her :o(.
