  1. I went to hear the Rev Al at the John Street Methodist Church a couple of years ago, that church is in the financial distrcit so it draws people in for interesting lunchtime services. he was quite a good preacher, old fashioned fire and brimstone but with a modern witty twist. I liked it. He was a huge draw.
As for the cartoon, as I mentioned earlier, when I first saw it I thought it just meant that the package out of congress was so dumb that a mad chimp had written it, but I think the editors of the Post should have seen the other interpretation and nixed it. Although honestly some of the cartoons in the post make this one look mild by comparison.
I am a news junkie and read four or five papers a day, whenever I can.

  2. Apologies for all of the cutting and pasting today. I looked up some Sharpton quotes and found a few I thought were pretty good:

    – During my 2004 presidential campaign, I was fond of saying that it was high time for the Christian right to meet the right Christians.

    – I do believe the Democratic party has moved far to the right. I do believe that the party has a bunch of elephants running around in donkey clothes.

    – I grew up in the 1950s and ’60s, when it was almost a holiday when a black act would go on Ed Sullivan.

    – I won vice president of my student body in high school. That doesn’t mean anything.

    – If Charlton Heston can have a constitutional right carry a rifle, why can’t grandma have a constitutional right to health care?

    – We have defeated Jim Crow, but now we have to deal with his son, James Crow Jr., esquire.

    – We’re not anti-police… we’re anti-police brutality.

    – We’re not willing to give black leaders second chances because, in most cases, we’re not willing to give them first chances.

    – Who defines terrorists? Today’s terrorist is tomorrow’s friend.

  3. denton…I had not heard that. Those are certainly very level headed remarks by The Reverend. Maybe he’s getting old!!! I’d hate to see him lose his fire but THL is correct…you always think he’s up to something.

  4. I like Rev. Al. He’s far more measured than he was back in the day. In fact his comments on the cartoon were quite balanced, methinks. From cnn…

“The cartoon in today’s New York Post is troubling at best, given the racist attacks throughout history that have made African-Americans synonymous with monkeys,” Sharpton said.

Sharpton questioned whether Delonas “is making a less-than-casual inference to this form of racism.”
“The Post should at least clarify what point they were trying to make in this cartoon, and reprimand their cartoonist for making inferences that are offensive and divisive at a time the nation struggles to come together to stabilize the economy”

I mean, that sounds pretty reasonable, no? He’s not calling for the cartoonist to be beheaded, unlike in Denmark…
