  1. “Now, I don’t begrudge folks who are wealthy, many of whom worked hard to attain their success. I just believe they’ve had a nice ride for a while and need to contribute where they are cearly able to during this difficult time for our country.”

Where do you think all the money has been coming from all these years????

Also, do you know what level of income one has to earn at the “poverty level” before the rate rises above 17%

$57,000. That may still be a de facto poverty level in NYC but certainly not for the rest of the country.

Know your tax tables before you start calling out what’s fair & unfair.

  2. Do you want economic policy determined by the 85% of the population that hasn’t even heard of a ‘demand curve’?

To quote Buckley, “I would rather be governed by the first 200 people in the Boston phone book than the faculty of Harvard.” Actually, that quote is like 40 years-old, and at this point, I’d be more comfortable with another city or area than Boston: most of the sane people have left Boston or died…

In any case, you now have the government of moron-savants of which you dream. Is it still Bush’s fault? OF COURSE.

  3. quote:
“so any suggestions of places to go(beach restaurants), bike routes on north or south fork of LI? more quiet more subdued?”

Some of my fav. spots on long island that fit that criteria would be Shirley, Mastic Beach, and Wyndanche.

DON’T BE A DICK… I never said people are stupid. I said people are uninformed and not experts!

Do you want economic policy determined by the 85% of the population that hasn’t even heard of a ‘demand curve’?! Do you want foreign policy determined by the majority of Americans that can’t find China on a map? Do you want the decision to privatize Social Security made by referendum… by folks that have a total of 32 seconds of information thrown at them by a cable news outlet?! Should the Clean Air Act have been written by a million people using a Wiki?

OR… Do you want our representatives (most with degrees in things like Law, Economics, Political Science, etc.) to make these decisions because are elected to do this… consult with EXPERTS like economists, scientists, military strategists…

Effing absurd. Decision-making by direct democracy is great on a 200 person Kibbutz. Not for a nation of 300 million with GDP of $14.3 trillion.

  5. “That was my point about the health-care mandate. It was very clear that this part of the bill was highly unpopular, yet they were determined to ram it through.

As I said at the beginning, the left is going to pay a high price for this attitude, come November.”

    Most certainly.

  6. “It may have been a lower rate, ENY but it amounted to more dollars. You don’t pay bills with rates.”

Cold comfort to the family at the bottom of the scale, Dave. The practical effect is families on the low end of the scale make choices about heating their homes and whether or not they can buy food, while those at the top end worry about whether or not this is a good time to take an around-the-world vacation. Now, I don’t begrudge folks who are wealthy, many of whom worked hard to attain their success. I just believe they’ve had a nice ride for a while and need to contribute where they are cearly able to during this difficult time for our country. The idea that wealthy folks spend their tax savings is questionable, and certainly has not been evident in the last several years.

  7. Slopefarm;

I generally agree that the Gay Rights movement has been much smarter than other social movements in trying to work through the political system to obtain their goals. I tip my hat to them in doing so.

As I said at the beginning, my argument was not about the gay marraige issue, but how the left has a tendency to avoid political solutions these days, and treat popular sentiments as something to be cured, rather than negotiated. That was my point about the health-care mandate. It was very clear that this part of the bill was highly unpopular, yet they were determined to ram it through.

As I said at the beginning, the left is going to pay a high price for this attitude, come November.
