lechcal,
my favorite part of the Hall of Science is that room where you can visualize the gamma rays and electrons shooting through your body.
next time you’re there, go to the small Queens Zoo next door. it’s small but it’s circular so you can’t get lost and there are some nice animals there including a couple of Bald Eagles and a large petting zoo for kids. The eagles are huge.
Cgar,
the miniature NYC is across the Grand Central in the Queens Museum.
kens,
I think I’m going for Japanese at lunch too 😉
Donatella, I don’t think the Flea was supposed to be Brownstone- or home-oriented, and my sympathy about the parking spaces. I often think about the people who live in the blocks around Target–what a dirty trick on them, 7 days a week!
Have you looked at Eddie’s on Greene between Grand and Classon? Also in Bed-Stuy on Tompkins between Jefferson and Hancock there’s a store that refinishes furniture and sells interesting bric-a-brac from years gone by. I almost bought a menorah there when I saw it in the window last December! There used to be two different stores with old stuff, but the place on the corner of Jefferson now sells beautiful modern pieces.
Also on the same block is a tiny little dress shop which has really great clothes and hand-made jewelry. And on the corner of Hancock is the new Peaches Hothouse restaurant. Plus the French Pastry Shop on the corner of Putnam and Tompkins.
Also there are a couple of places on Bedford, one on the corner of Putnam and another nearby.
Always easy to park. And when your internet goes down, there’s a cheap place on block between Putnam and Jefferson. I think they charge $3/hour.
My favorite thing at the Intrepid, by far, was the Concorde. What a stunning aircraft. You can walk around and see it from lots of angles. Such a beautiful machine.
Actually Biff, come to think of it your membership to the NY Hall of Science might work for that whole network. If you go to the Intrepid, make sure to ask.
Rob, next time a stranger asks to bum a cigarette, just say, “Great, I’m so glad you asked. I need just one more dollar for my subway ride home” and extend your hand, wait for the money and only give the cigarette after he/she pays.
How is that a moral conundrum, Rob? Say what you say when people panhandle money — sorry, I don’t have spare change in this case, sorry I can’t afford it. It’s true and i think that is bad manners anyway, to be accosting people for cigarettes.
Biff we got a family membership to the Brooklyn Children’s Museum (something like $100 for a year). That gets the whole family into a whole network of science and children’s museums around the country, including (just in NYC) the Intrepid, the NY Hall of Science and the Brooklyn Children’s Museum. I suspect the Champs are a little old for the B’lyn Children’s Museum but I’m sure the Intrepid is age appropriate for them. The membership also gets us into a really good museum in Kansas City when we need a break from the in-laws and got us into the Chattanooga Children’s Museum (for the next time you take the Champs to Chattanooga). All for around 100 bucks a year for the whole family!
Good to hear the Champs like it at the NY Hall of Science. I had never gone before this weekend and was very impressed.

Dunno about the scale model, CGar. We didn’t make it through the whole museum.

lechacal, Biff, is the NY Hall of Science in Queens the one with the scale model of every building in the City?
