Nicolas Mahut (FR) is playing American John Isner (23) on Court 18 at Wimbledon:
6-4 (break for Isner)
3-6 (break for Mahut)
6-7
7-6
35-35
So that’s at least 97 games without a break in service. 141 Aces between them. 462 winners, only 93 unforced errors (e.g., off the effing charts high quality).
They’ve been playing for 7 hours; no end in sight, both are spent.
MM, if we could be as successful as the Romans, that would be cause for celebration.
You of all people should appreciate their architectural and engineering accomplishments.
All part of their culture of accomplishment.
As Gibbons so eloquently documented, the decline and fall of the Roman Empire was due to a loss of the civic virtues that made it great in the first place.
I think that DCB is right. My only quibble with him is that the Pax Americana works well for the same reasons as the Pax Romana: assimilation. Our assimilation works in a different way, however.
DCB, unfortunately, in the long run that didn’t work out too well for the Romans, either. The empire was too big, they couldn’t keep in touch with far flung outposts, like Britain, and armies, money and resources were swallowed up in futile battles with “conquered” people rebelling, forming resistance groups and engaging in insurgent guerilla warfare.
I have no clue how to follow tennis scoring.
BH, maybe they can meet at the net and decide it with a coin or sneaker flip to decide who should retire from the match

Rob, for $9.50/hr, I’ll rent him out to you so you can get into the water park
i might just steal one of the child mannequins from the old navy window display actually and use that to get into the park!

M4L, isn’t that child labour? I don’t mean Rob, I mean putting your kids to work for you like that.

Sound familiar?
I’ll probably bring the mini-me over there this weekend.
