When I moved to Brooklyn in the mid 80’s, I couldn’t believe how good I felt when I got home. I lived in Brooklyn Heights and I went one stop on the subway from Wall St to Clark St. and it was another universe, quiet, pretty, a neighborhood. I feel the same way about my place now (I also did the math on coop vs house and definately the tax advantages are great, but also it was like heaven not dealing with the coop/board. I was president of that coop longer than is optimal for mental health. Toilets and problems included, it is definately worth it having bought the house).
“anyone else use the current ‘V’ train – and soon will be needing the ‘M’?
How reliable will this M train be? I’m still annoyed they rerouted the F several years back.”
I’m wondering this too. probably no more reliable than the M is currently – which isn’t bad, actually.
Btw, I’m with you re: the resistance to taking anti-depressants or any other kind of meds on a regular basis to temper your mood. I have a close friend who was advised by docs to do this and it really screwed him up (the side effects, dependance issues, etc.). My own feelings are that people are over-medicated in the US. I can’t believe how many people take prescription drugs regularly. One almost feels like an outcast here if not in therapy and/or on Zoloft, Lexapro, etc.
I know what you mean. Sometimes it adds several minutes to posting time just to scan for possible double entendre or rewrite potential. Other times, I leave it in, of course. A few years back biff had some fun with one of my posts. I was bragging about some DIY jobs I started doing around the house. Who knew that flashing a roof, stripping paint and dealing with peeling heat risers could be so much fun.
rob,
I tried a lengthy post to you but the site wigged out on me. In any event, not to second guess Dr. Legion, but I’m with those who are starting to see the increasing sourness of your posts as a possible brain chemistry issue that may be interfering with your life. Ditch this site if it helps, but you seem to be so consistently caustic lately that I imagine it is not limited to your reaction to posts on this site.
I think the advice about anti-depressents is well-taken and you should consider it. My sense is wellbutrin and lexipro work very differently. Wellbutrin helps with the lethargy aspect of depression. Lexipro is more aimed at easing negative ruminations, the noise in your head. (Of course, there’s never a guarantee any of tehse drugs will work for any particular person — best to be monitored and try to tailor to your needs. And the drugs do not change your personality, just ease symptoms.) A bunch of us know you well enough to know you are a decent guy and not filled with as much sourness as your posts suggest, and you used to be less consistently caustic online than you are now. So we are worried about you, as friends. Think about it.

they are doing construction in the lobby and elevator (for the next YEAR) so now my entrance is actually on spring street. but i still have to be on broadway tho for a lot of things. i give myself a ton of credit for not yet having gone apeshi+ on anyone.
and yes dave, i too, totally recognize and cherish the temp difference in the summer from manhattan to brooklyn.
Rob, you’re an important voice here. Don’t sell yourself short. It’s reflexive by now for you to visit here and there’s no reason to give it up.
Look at things my way if you think it will help: there are a number of things in my life that keep me balanced. Work, my non-profit, being online, relationships, art/writing. When one is down, the others are likely to be up. Very rarely are all of them down at the same time.
You have work, blogging, your dog, apparently painting. Why don’t you go to 3rd Ward in Bushwick and take some classes? You have the drive to pour out some energy and to creat something.
“there will seriously be some opposition if taxes for older co-ops and condos do not go down from those levels.”
Not really kens. We had a similar wave of construction in the 1980s and the same thing happened. The key is to plan in advance, start raising reserve fund early, etc.

Welcome back, Rob.
