  1. These days, most of society’s problems come from an excess in resources. Too much oil, calories, fat, etc. etc.

Except for the past 50 or 100 years, humans lived in a sort of an equilibrium. Just enough food, just enough energy, etc etc.

It’s one thing to live in that lower state of equilibrium. It something very differeint, and much, much scarier, to move quickly from our current state back to the lower equilibrium.

Picture a bunch of animals in captivity. Something dangerous. Piranhas in a big tank maybe, but make the tank big enough to allow them to reproduce in large numbers. Feed them enough to keep the population stable for a few generations. Then start feeding them as much as they can possibly eat. The population explodes. Then all of a sudden cut the food back to the lower amount you were feeding them when it all started. A lot less fun for the piranhas to get back to the original position than it was to be at the original position in the first place.

  2. t6, go look up the numbers on the car you own and the car you rented… your plymouth is probably under 100 hp. New Ford probably more. Some of that is dragging around the extra weight mandated by law and requested by customers (side reinforcing beams, airbags, ten speaker steroes) but some of it just goes into making it faster to the next red light.
