CGar, many people in the country think their local pizza is good/great then they go to Chicago and NYC then realize this is good/great and that was so so. same case here with Penang.
rf, the alley one is good. the penang in chinatown is the one north of canal on elizabeth. not sure if that oen on grand st is a penang or not but that too is just so so
I’m surprised. I always order the Basil Chicken or Mango Chicken, Nasi Goreng and String Beans in black bean sauce, and it’s always great. Been going there since before DH was born!
My daughter requested Thai food so that’s what we’re looking for. We have a lot of Malaysian friends (Chinese and not) and used to go to the restaurant on Baxter south of Canal a lot. Is that Penang, or is it the one on Grand St. or in the alley between Bowery and Elizabeth next to McDonald’s? My daughter went to the elementary school at Baxter and Hester so we know that nabe very well.
If it’s better than what we can get delivered in Bed-Stuy, it’s good enough. And that is not a very high standard to beat!
etson, do you find the chinese food is indeed much much better where you are than ones in NYC?

“I’ve been to Penang. In fact, i slept with the owner. I’d rate both experiences a “2” on a scale of 1-10.”
In the spirit of the old Newleywed Game, which item from the Penang menu would you say best describes the owner:
1) Shrimp Puff
2) Mini Spring Rolls
3) Kari Mee
4) Wonton Mee
5) Lobak
6) Beef Chow Fun
7) Sizzling Beef
8) Jumbo Shrimp
9) Curry Crab
10) Fruity Smoothie

Never been to the Soho one. The former UWS one and the UES one were OK for what they were.

DIBS, 2 out of 10? Are you sure you’re not letting the sleep experience influence your opinion of the food?
