Open Thread

I moved to New York (Brooklyn, really) because I got a job here. I wouldn’t have moved here without that. New York does not excite me so much that I’m willing to work 3 barista jobs and bus tables at Chipotle Grill to afford my rent in a studio in Bensonhurst.

I included NYC in my job search net because I have a lot of friends here. I don’t think NYC is the greatest city in the world. This isn’t to say I want to leave… but if I had a great opportunity elsewhere, the “greatest city in the world” thing ain’t gonna enter into the equation. Does NYC rank above, say, Omaha? Of course. Would I prefer to live in Amsterdam or Chicago? Maybe… lots of factors at play.

My point. New York City is a lot of things. It’s an image for some. It’s a place to work and play for others. It’s a place to dig in and create a doomsday future similar to Grand Theft Auto for folks like The What.

We’ve gotten a number of emails today about someone going off the rails (or is it of his meds?) so we’ve added a poll above to take the group temperature…

Also true. It’s the pretentiousness of being widely recognized as the “number 1 city in the world,” whatever the hell that means. People come from all over just to starve to death here because they’re all hooked on an image of Manhattan that’s been sold since the early 1900s at least. Neither Miami or L.A. can claim anything like that.

What- glad to hear it. As I said, I would consider it a character flaw in myself if you actually liked me. Like getting a recommendation from Hitler.
