They have lactation consultants on staff in all the hospitals too. Scoff if you want but that’s actually super helpful. We had our second kid at Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn Heights (HUGE MISTAKE – only went there b/c that’s the hospital our OB was affiliated with). The nurses had a really discouraging attitude about breastfeeding. They actually brought in formula after the birth even though we told them we weren’t doing that. Their attitude was “oh, well as soon as you have any problems just switch to formula.” In Oz they have someone there on staff who helps you work through any problems and is really encouraging. Such a different attitude.
Had the third kid at Methodist in the slope. Much better than LICH but still part of the US system and a far cry from Oz.
DIBS, I remember that Aussie! Was his name Andy? Can’t remember for sure, but he was a very nice guy.
Wasder, thanks. I’m not at all worried about the surgery. In fact, I want to get it done at this point. I wasn’t really looking for health advice on the web so much as just trying to find out how common my symptons were. Just reading posts from others who were going through what I’m going through made me feel better. Perhaps it’s akin to the comfort I’ve felt on Brownstoner knowing I’m not the only asshat who bought right at the peak of the housing bubble!
Lech–so what is your theory on why a joint public/private system is such a hard sell here? Obviously there is the fear and misinformation aspect. but I am curious to know what other factors make it so hard to propose. Malpractice reform is an interesting notion—I guess the lawyers lobby puts mad pressure against this.
I’ve heard that folks go overseas for dental work too (I think it is Hungary). I’ve heard that the savings in the fees more than makes up for the cost of the trip. Quality dental work and a vacation thrown in. Not a bad deal.
Sorry Benson, this sounds an opening for a plot of a horror movie…
I may be the only asshat who closed the week of the Lehman Bros debacle.
benson…it probably was “Aussie” now that I think of it. yes, he did move back to Australia.
He was probably the first poster I met before we ever got together at Union Hall.

Are you guys talking about the guy who posted as “Aussie”? He used to go at it with Miss Muffet. He went back to Australia, as I remember it.
BTW: where is Muffie these days?
DIBS–its on the tip of my tongue (no homo)…
