  1. dibs,

    Your cousin? is that right.
I’ve been calling up her office
    for the past month giving
her my opinion of her work.

For some reason I never get a
return call or letter of acknowledgement.;)

  2. Cobble, the only family member I have political discussions with are my brother and sister-in-law and she’s a die hard republican. We don’t talk politics in front of the parents!!!

If ever there was a tough race for a republican to win, it will be this one. He’ll get tarred with the Wall Street brush for sure. If he wins, all bets are off for ALL democratic Congressmen

  3. Negro (spelled with a capital ‘N’ and pronounced appropriately), was the educated and dignified way to refer to Black Americans when the colloquial term was ‘colored’.

As to the difference between African American and Irish American, it should be noted that the exact geographical origins of most African Americans were lost to the history books. It is only within the past few years that DNA testing has allowed folks to get a better idea of what section of Africa their ancestors came from.

As a white person, I don’t really mind adapting my usage to whatever is desired by any given minority. I have been around long enuf to have successfully migrated through Negro, Black, Afro-American, African-American, and African American. I think verbally that’s a lot of syllables and it’s easier not to use the form, but in a more formal environment it works for me.
