on the Right we have societies that concentrate their wealth in the higher classes and let their poor fend for themselves (like Mexico). I’m aginst illegal immigration from a humanistic/realist perspective; why should we be so complacent in allowing a defacto indentured servitude for illegals in America, let them take what is their’s in Mexico (home to a very wealthy upper class)by force if necessary.
on the Left we have societies that take the accumulated wealth of their society and spread it so thin as to make themselves take a step backward in their standard of living, like Venezuela, I think Chavez is about finished with freedom of speech there, having closed the last remaining independent television station and the national courts are long gone.
then we have the USA where we have the best of both worlds; wealth and opportunity and everyone spends their time complaining….till the money runs out. then starts the real heartache.
I made this point to Noki yesterday. If you ever get a chance to watch Glen Beck, who can arguably claim to be the catalyst for the Tea party movement (he was the first prominent figure to show up at their rallies), you will see he DOES make the point that popular entitlements will have to be pared down. There is no escaping this point.
I wouldn’t use Greece as the example of what’s coming, we don’t have to go that far. Take a look at California.
DeLepp made a pithy, but excellent, summary of the the world economic situation yesterday: the non-Asians are focused on resentment and entitlement. That is a hard truth to swallow, but it is nonetheless true.
We simply cannot afford this level of entitlements anymore, in a global economic competition. The day of reckoning is coming.
Legion, one could say similar things about the tea party folks, wanting tax cuts, deficit cuts, but not being willing to identify thigns they would be willing to give up to get here. Cuts area always at someone else’s expense. I say that not to score a liberal v. conservative point. In general, our discourse about these things is fundamentally dishonest. I think liberals and conservatives are equally unwilling to be honest about the disconnect between what they want in terms of services and taxes. Everyone wants more than they are willing to pay for.
CGar, I am not sure you altered the meaning that much.
“You can pick & choose all kinds of figures & I don’t think they really matter so much as the sentiment. Our culture gets its priorities bassackwards. Tiger Woods should just be known as an athlete & we wouldn’t give a moment’s notice to his infidelity. Firemen who save people’s lives are heroes – football players & cheesy film actors aren’t. It’s probably salient that Sully has a happy marriage. Accept the spirit of the thought, not the statistics.
P.S. Snappy – It *is* the season of crucifixions…”
Biff, if ever you were looking to “get into the pants” of any of the cat ladies, that link surely would have done it!!!!
Here is a tea party many of the women on here can appreciate:

slopefarm,
sure, it works both ways,

Arkady, I bow before your usual wisdom!
Meant to say, I can’t remember the last time I ate good Chinese, which has a different meaning altogether.
