  1. Actualy spain is on the fore front of solar and wind technolgy. Most of south america utilities/banks/oil/infrastucture are backed by spanish money. I know more than a few engineers who can only get jobs in tourism/retail, great way to plan for the future.

  2. i had no idea any ideas, inventions, and technology actually came out of spain (or most of europe for that matter). how can there possibly be a “brain drain” happening there? europe has been one giant intellectual vacuum for hundreds of years now.

    *rob*

  3. Unions are one reason spain’s uneployment is so high for young people. Because they can’t fire anyone they’ve created a two tiered system where new workers are hired at a pittance to established workers but they are the first to get laid off. Once again young spanairds with ideas are leaving and a brain drain is happening again.

  4. MM, you’re right, both union and non-union workers abuse the system and many of them on both sides deserve to get fired. The problem is, as we see with the rubber rooms and countless other examples, YOU CAN’T JUST FIRE A UNION WORKER.

And therein lies the real abuse. Nonunion employees are let go at the drop of a hat when there’s cause.

Additionally, union workers threaten to strike if anyone dare speaks of cutting their benefits, WHICH ESSENTAILLY ALL OF THE REST OF AMERICA HAS HAD CUT.

Like with Southwest, maybe these union members would also make above average wages if they weren’t unionized, worked for a company and had the same incentives as management does.
