Good plan, legion. If you have a job and you have money. If you can afford to pay 10K into a company health plan, you’re doing good. Most of us can’t afford that.
So, dibs- unemployment is not good? YOu would throw those of us who are unemployed under a bus- because trust me- we have been looking for jobs. And finding nothing. What should we do? Get thrown out on the street? Not eat? No one said unemployment is a stimulus- its a stopgap. And necessary. Unemployment is not a gift- its a lifeline.
Legion- is that really what’s driving the spike in healthcare costs? Patients demanding 5 mri for a sprained ankle, just for fun? that’s ridiculous, and there’s no evidence of that. Patients do what their doctors tell them. Doctors do not collaborate with other doctors because there’s no economic incentive to do so- that’s what leads to inefficiencies and redundancies.
we have recent examples of large governments spending through the nose to stimulate jobs;
Japan
Soviet Union
both failed with massive stimulus type projects.
let’s learn from other’s mistakes, or even our own with the great depression, the WPA while admirable did not help us recover.
In the end, it was a change of monetary policy that helped us recover. strengthening the dollar.
If anyone has suggestions, I would appreciate it (please respond in the Forum and not here)!
“Friends who are considering moving back to New York were asking me about places to live in Brooklyn. They have three large dogs (all over 50 pounds) and, as such, need to have outdoor space. They would also like to find a place with decent access to subways. They are looking to spend anywhere from $500k to $900k and would like at least two bedrooms and two bathrooms.
Can anyone suggest a nice (preferably brownstone filled) neighbourhood where they can get at least a garden level apartment with access to the backyard that is also relatively close to subways?
If they decide they want a full home, what are other nice neighbourhoods where they would have subway access and be able to purchase something without spending what they would in Brooklyn Heights or Park Slope?
HSAs as primary healthcare coverage is probably the worst idea i’ve heard yet. lay-people aren’t doctors. its not the same as the rest of the consumer world, plan and simple. i don’t even thinki have to explain this one.
I thought the President’s Q & A in Baltimore on Friday was one of the most riveting pieces of political television I’ve ever seen.
It was common sense (Obama) vs. complete and total delusion (House GOP).
My father, who is a born and bred Republican and voted for McCain watched it and said he now has a new appreciation for Obama. NEVER thought I’d hear those words from his mouth. He said it he was embarassed by how poorly the GOP could not even seem to grasp basic principles of economics.
READ WHAT I POSTED, bxgrl. I agreed with unemployment benefits and I agree they should be extended.
If you can’t understand my argument about stimulating demand then there’s nothing else I can do.

CGar…so there was a bidding war of sorts for Adelphi????
I think that place needs $400-500,000 to make it nice enough to sell for $1.2-1.3MM so, at that price, it’s not economical.
I hope it’s a labor of love for the people who bought it. It will be interesting to follow its progress.

Blowfish;
The numbers shown in your cartoon are meaningless. The key indicator is deficit as percent of GDP. See my discussion above.
I just did a Forum post that I pasted below.
