  1. Exactly, 11217.

benson- you’r simply playing with words- just because unemployment is part of a stimulus package, no one ever expects it to stimulate anything. I know- what I get in unemployment is barely enough to live on- and I get the max. So let’s not play word games.

  2. “In the end, it was a change of monetary policy that helped us recover. strengthening the dollar.”

Legion- yes- regulatory changes that were weakened or tossed out by the Republicans.”

Man, people are on a roll today!! Bxgrl: please be aware that monetary policy is the responsibility of the Federal Reserve. The change in regulations of which you speak has nothing to do with the Federal Reserve or moentary policy.

  3. 8% was not fudged- it was based on what they knew at the time. They knew the numbers would continue to grow, that it would level off at 8%, but did not know the extent of the crisis- it was a moving target.

  4. I said it once, I’ll say it again,

    Reagan inherited huge unemployment numbers
he inherited a massive 30 year cold war.
    he inherited a hostage crisis.
he inherited interest rates at more than 20%.

    never heard him mention Carter.
    the rest is history.

  5. “Your dismissive statement is quite shortsighted”

sorry, Leg, rushing around this morning. but basically, what i menat was, HSA are fine for things like glasses, massage, OTC, etc. But lay people can’t call the shots on which procedures they should get done and what specialists they should confer. And as I wrote above, I don’t believe that patients demanding frivolous procedures is the cause of the cost crisis anyway

  6. “stop believing the hype, the President is following a plan based on economic theory that has been disproven time and again”

Legion…the sad thing to me is that YOU are the believing the hype.

The economic theory which has been disproven by the most respected economists is that of GW Bush. Not Obama.

Obama inherited a complete and total shitshow, and it won’t be fixed in one year.

  7. Blowfish;

Are you for real with your arguments today?

So the 8% unemployment was a fudged number, eh? What is the point of having a discussion if you can’t agree on a scorekeeper.

Ah, the internet: the conspiracy-theory-lover’s dream world!!

  8. Legion- is that really what’s driving the spike in healthcare costs? Patients demanding 5 mri for a sprained ankle, just for fun? that’s ridiculous, and there’s no evidence of that. Patients do what their doctors tell them. Doctors do not collaborate with other doctors because there’s no economic incentive to do so- that’s what leads to inefficiencies and redundancies.

Yes, I am being a bit hyperbolic, but the essential point of my statement is based in fact. People are walking into offices routinely and asking for the highest priced meds or latest technology to assess their illness. We all know that the common cold is not cured by antibiotics (it is a viral condition) but people routinely go into their doctor’s office and demand a 400 dollar prescription for the latest and greatest antibiotic. No different from a dozen other common conditions that can be diagnosed and treated clinically without the need for exessive sonograms, CT scans or MRI’s. There was a recent study that showed the benefits of knee arthroscopy to be equivocal to no treatment. That means, no discernable benefit for a large subgroup of patients who had this procedure.

that means billions were spent on a procedure with marginal benefit to many people. Just an example, as you asked.
