  1. etson- but it is a problem when the most powerful religious leaders come out against equal rights, knowing this will have an impact on their constituents- voters- who then have an impact on politicians and representatives. By taking an official stance, they put pressure on church (and temple) goers to vote or press for particular legislation. That’s what happened under Bush- you were told, sometimes not so subtly- to vote a particular way or you would be voting against your religious beliefs. A perfect example is when pro-choice politicians are refused communion because of their stance. And of course, it is all over the papers.

  2. “What the heck is this??”

Cobble, bxgrl, etson and I have all gotten the same letter from Health Net that a portable drive with unencrypted patient information for the years 2002-2007 has been lost or stolen. Minor data security breach is all. But they offered identity theft protection or something like that. Gotta be sure to close that barn door now that the horses have all taken off.

  3. “I got my Health Net “we published your social security number and all your private health care information from 2002-2007 online” letter yesterday.”

    What the heck is this??

  4. Yes, but we were talking about the issue of tax exemption in general, and an institution can be “both partisan and tax exempt”.
Also the Manhattan Declaration does not lobby for particular legislation or endorse candidates, and so I don’t see the problem in that case..
