  1. “Drag racing! In Brooklyn? Really?”

Illegal street drag racing near Fountain Avenue. It was VERY exciting as a 10/12 year old to watch the parade of hot rods roll by pre-race, see guys bet on the races, and watch the match ups take place. Strangely, I don’t remember an inordinate number of wrecks. In time, the cops cracked down. But for a while you could count on a drag race just about every weekend.

  2. cobblehiller,

oh yeah, there was this long stretch of road parallel to Flatlands avenue.
you’d get souped up Monte Carlo’s and Novas going down the straightaway.
it was like that for years.

  3. “That’s where they used to drag race, before that huge BJ’s complex was built.”

YES! You do know the area. Those drag races formed the centerpiece of my weekend pre-teen activity back in the day. It’s amazing that when my family moved into the area (1967), the entire Starrett City complex and the condos, new Gateway shopping area, etc. was nothing but flat, undeveloped land. Oh yeah, and the garbage dump near the Belt.

  4. ENY,

I know the area well. Just north of Starrett City. There’s a new condo development that’s doing well in that area. Reasonably priced condos in buildings that were once rentals, just off Flatlands. That’s where they used to drag race, before that huge BJ’s complex was built.

  5. ” when you lived in ENY did you get out at Euclid, Sheridan or Liberty?”

I didn’t live near the “A” stops, and so rarely took the “A.” When I did I’d get off at Liberty and ride take a bus to my part of ENY. Normally, I’d take the #3 all the way to New Lots Avenue. My family’s house was (and still is) in the Spring Creek section of ENY, south of Linden Blvd.
