  1. DIBS — Yes, the Kanarsee laughed all the way to the wampum bank on that deal (it was really more like $1000 anyway). They lived in Brooklyn but sold what they probably believed were non-exlcusive rights to use the land of Manhattan, where they did not live and which tehy did not exclusively control, and they probably had little concept of exclusive property ownership as understood in European society. In their minds, they sold nothing of value. It might even be thought of as protection money (“Go ahead, walk around Mannahatta, we won’t kill you if you pay us $24”). Only the Dutch understood it as an exclusive land purchase. As we lawyers say, there was no meeting of the minds. Contract’s probably voidable, although subsequent events would suggest a ratification.

Any thoughts from the rest of the b-stoner legal affairs unit?

  2. for what it’s worth, that class i was talking about our final oral presentation was to RAP something. hahhaha. 1.) imagine being terrified to talk in front of a class and then 2.) imagine being white and having to rap in front of a class that isnt a bunch of white people. hahahhaha. i swear to hell that made me stronger than any other college class i ever had. i dont even remember the actual experience of it, other than a teacher MAKING us get out of our comfort zone. i did get an A tho 🙂 (but i think everyone got one)

  3. Of course Beyonce is no great singer. Her appeal is in her looks and her dancing. It’s like what I say about the diff between Whitney and Madonna. Whitney is a singer. Madonna is an entertainer. Madonna can’t sing for shit. It seems as though most people like her and folks like Britney, Rhianna, and Beyonce for a reason entirely exclusive of the singing voice. I’ve heard better singing on the subways as well.

  4. “24 dollars was a lot back then tho!”

It was a lot back then. And in a sense the Dutch were behaving in a far more enlightened manner than other colonials by PAYING Native Americans for their land. If the English, Spanish, etc. decided to colonize the place first, they’d have just killed and enslaved the Native Americans and taken the land.
