I am just addressing the complaint that people do not get what they “deserve” based on their societal benefit. Its a nice point to make but adds little practical benefit – our labor markets are setup that way and I am not sure that if they were we wouldnt just end up with a lot of out of work Carpenters and tradesman (or teachers or whatever you highly value).

no – unions are all bad because they stifle competition, which promotes inefficient work at higher prices. and then people flip out when jobs are outsourced or move overseas?
Unions are against the freemarket principles our economy is based on.
lets call a union what it really is – a labor trust.

It’s almost impossible to fire a teacher or professor that has tenure for not doing a good job (underperforming), but if they refuse to do their job or most of their job — i.e., “I’ll teach one course per semester, but I’m not going to do anything else… no meetings, no research, no advising, nothing.” They can actually be brought up on felony larceny charges… stealing public funds.
This happens… not often, but it happens.
Mandatory retirement was outlawed, so this became a necessary and painful remedy to rotting old professors that refused to leave, but had no intention of working anymore.
