bxgrl – If you think Sarah Palin is an extremist, your exposure to the political spectrum is limited. She has various flaws. She is inexperienced and was unprepared for national office. But her platform – if you actually take the time to stop hating her and focus on it – is a pretty solidly conservative platform. Agree with it or not it is not “extremist.” You and Arkady and others really do engage in a lot of ad hominem conservative bashing without really demonstrating an understanding of the issues or an appreciation for the depth of a lot of political debate. I’m sorry if this is offensive but it’s true and someone has to say it. Really, take the time and write down the key points of her platform and then pretend it’s Margaret Thatcher saying them. Stop hating the person and start understanding the ideas. The quality of the political debate on this site is really atrocious.
As someone remarked above, I admire Peggy Noonan – but must admit I don’t understand her Reagan hero worship. Gotta run but there *are* other conservatives I look on favorably – I listen to them to hear how reasonable people can stay on the conservative platform.
if people think democrats had nothing to do with the current financial debacle then they are grossly underinformed about the mechanics of how all these crappy mortgages came to be that made up the securities that caused the financial meltdown. both sides of the fence share the blame. seriously.
“such as benson who use “liberal” like a curse word.”
Bxgrl;
Man, you are off to a good start today, aren’t you? I would ask you to find ONE quote where I used the word “liberal” as a curse word. I’ll tell you point blank: speak for yourself, and STFU when it comes to talking on my behalf.
“My challenge for my friends on the left: please identify leading conservatives in the Senate or House whom you admire as serving their country. I didn’t say you have to agree with them, just admire them for their service.”
benson, I did, and you never responded. Olympia Snowe, Susan Eisenhower and my mother [although she never held office she did serve her country in other ways.]
Lechacal – That would take hours to do if there were any recent reasonable proposals on the part of the GOP. As it is, it’s my belief that most of the mess we’re in today is a direct result of GOP policies of Reagan & both Bushes. Had we had a Dem for the previous 8 years we wouldn’t have the Iraq imbroglio which in turn might’ve staved off the financial debacle. In addition, w/ almost anyone else but Cheney (GOP included) we might well have gotten Bin Laden by now & the terrorist threat would not be costing us so much in time & energy wasted because he would’ve been seen to have failed.
M4L, please. I was in NO WAY shape or form slamming your parents!
Arkady, my writing is usually INcoherent, so who do I blame?

You made a self-deprecating remark, and I made a joke about it NOT aimed at you or your folks. I was making a joke that is typically made here in NYC when someone whines that they have a problem in their life and blame it on their parents. It was a silly joke, and how you could take it as a slight against your parents is beyond me. It had nothing to do with your parents, it was about YOU complaining that your writing is “usually INcoherent”.
I like Sherwood Schwartz’s musical Hamlet best…

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming….
benso, I’ll do that (and in fact arkady and I both answered you the other day) when you answer my question instead of running and hiding from it.
