Biff, that’s what I am saying. Jewish parents help out their “crotchfruit” whenever they can. My parents are ready to give up everything for my sis and me just so we are happy. they’ll give up their last peace of bread so they can add to our steak dinner which never made any sense to me but they insist.
It was very difficult for the to pack up everything in move here in their late 40s – early 50s, dropping careers there and fairly prominent good lifestyle to come here and live without the language knowledge and making something here just so their kids have a better lifestyle. My poor mom went from being and electrical engineer to cleaning floors and toilets just so we have a better future. She didn’t do that for long and as soon as she learned the language and got a new career going she switched but still. How many people would do that?
I was just genuinely wondering if that’s the same case in Asian cultures.
Biff, the times I pull that stunt, the poor wait staff gets chewed out. How could you do that? Didn’t I tell you I was going to pay the bill? My money is no good here?…..
I’m not Chinese so I can’t speak for the billions or so of them, but my parents did pay for my college tuition (though I swung grad school on my own, yay for student loans). So I returned the favor with a townhouse and cars. I think I got the short end of the stick.
Kens, I’m not sure if it’s a cultural difference with Jews. I might be skewed as almost all of the Jewish kids I knew growing up had very affluent parents who paid for everything for their kids.
M4L, another funny story about a way to try to subtly pay for the bill. Was with Mrs. C and Mama Champion at a restaurant in Montreal. Mrs. C asks for the bill in French so Mama C doesn’t have a chance to pay it. However, Mrs. C forgot that Mama C was born and raised in Montreal and understood everything, so she was all set to pounce on the cheque when the waiter brought it to the table. Mrs. C didn’t try that trick again.
The Chinese bf insists on paying for dinner almost every time we are out.
It too is a matter of “face” but probably focused on a different issue.
Biffers, dear, 65 doesn’t qualify as “elderly”.

“Chinese are visibly upset when they don’t have the honour of paying for everyone.

“Face” – a horrible chinese disease. example “Sh1t man, that brother has a bad case of the Face”
Pretty slick Gem!
“Do Chinese parents generally help their kids with downpayments or college tuition or that just not in the culture?

HA!!! I bought my parents a house!
“Biff, I never knew that.”
