i agree eton. i LOVED school. i had perfect attendance every grade except for 1/2 a day in 8th grade and 1 day in 12th grade 🙁 (i hated my home environment with a passion) so school made me happy. so yeah you do have a good point. sadly tho, school for a lot of parents is just free babysitting.
M4L, can one find “gratutious affection” in North Korea? Isn’t it pretty straight laced and restrictive there? I thought South Korea would be much more of a “candy store”.
Great, thanks for all the help guys.
Will follow up c-hiller and Snappy.
chicken – looking at leaving the HF world. Would not yet rule out return to long-only but would have to be the right kind of firm / strategy (value, systematic).
m4l – no ulcers yet but BP has shot up. I think I was at that point at in late 08-early 09 but have moved beyond since.
Rob, we could do away with schools, or at least make it optional. Even if a lot of people are doing distance learning, someone still has to “teach” those courses. There are a lot of kids who actually like school, usually because it’s where they see friends and so on.
Of course schools will never go away – parents these days are too afraid to let kids do much of anything unsupervised, and entrenched political interests are too powerful. The educational system has become more and more centralized over the last 20 years (long before NCLB) and will crush most innovative reforms.
