DIBS, they are certainly tourist traps, but many New Yorkers go too and the chopped liver there is decent. I still prefer the smoked meat in Montreal, but am fine with the pastrami at the places I mentioned.
hey b’stoners, if there’s a PLUSA gathering can I 1) attend and 2) can it be at the Draft Barn so I can wear my new Dress Barn dress that I purchased last weekend just for the occasion? I saw the shop and was like, “hey if Rob shops there I should check it out”. So glad I did. Their buyer is either a genius or has an awesome sense of humor.
funny thing, bxgrl, is I probably walked around 20 miles over the weekend, didn’t eat much, but still managed to gain 3 pounds after one trip to the deli! I wish I had Mrs. Champion’s metabolism.
bxgrl, everything there was old school heavy-duty artery-hardeningly tasty. I even asked a few servers how they stay so slim working there. They said it’s like working at a bakery. After a few weeks, you never want to eat another cookie for the rest of your life. Somehow, I don’t think I could ever get tired of good pastrami, chopped liver, kishka, latkes and everything else they had.
So who wants to know how my weekend was….. I went to a wedding in New Paltz and spent the weekend down there.
Saturday I went up Hyde Park to see the Vanderbilt Mansion. What can I say, it was breathtaking. The furniture and decor inside cost almost twice as much as the cost to built the mansion itself. The property and the gardens were breathtaking. My friend commented that the Italian gardens resembled a couple of Pompei gardens that she had seen on her trip to Italy.
Afterwards we ended up going to a picnic and a hike in Lake Minnewaska that was out of this world.
The place has no alcohol policy but us Russians can’t party without booze so I had to sneak a 24 case of beer and some wine and even conned a Park Ranger to help us drive it up to the top of the mountain (about a mile or 2) to the picnic area since cars were not allowed up there and only rangers on ATVs go around monitoring things. He was really cool and said that alcohol is not allowed but as long as we had plastic cups to pour and didn’t use bottles, he’ll “pretend” he didn’t see anything. One of the best picnics I’ve ever had since the views are great and the company was even greater. Most of the people in that crowd are hippie vegetarians but boy do they know how to party.
In the evening, we swam, had a nice dinner on the Hudson at one of those touristy restaurants but the food was pretty good albeit resembled a bit of glorified Applebee’s menu.
The wedding the next day was AWESOME! It was all outside interfaith married. and had a reform rabbi (with an earring and guitar!) and a reform priest (woman). First interfaith marriage I’ve been to and it was great, full of music, speeches and overall greatness. The reception was in a restaurant that was a remade 1759 colonial.
Fun people, great food, overall awesome weekend at a Hippie Wedding. I can’t even begin to tell of how much fun these people were. Too bad most don’t live in NYC and were from all over the great U.S.

Those places are all tourist trap ripoffs though aren’t they!!!
DIBS, places like Carnegie Deli, 2nd Ave Deli, Katz’s etc. still have decent chopped liver. I’m sure there are places in Brooklyn that have it too.
CGar, would you go after work?

Very hard to find chopped liver sandwiches anymore. Some of the delis on the second story in the jewelry district make them.
Biff, count me in for a High Line excursion. I was there once but will gladly go back.
