Sorry – Bxgrl, I love you but I don’t agree with what you’re saying which is basically the neighbor of the professor knew him, and chose to call the police on him just to give him a hard time because she is racist.
perhaps she didn’t know who he was – perhaps she would have done the same thing if a white, brown, lavendar or seafoam green person was doing the same thing.
I think we’re doing too much assuming about HER.
The cop on the other hand – he didn’t seem as if he handled the situation very well.
THL, The police should be trained to de-escalate a situation. Regardless of whether or not they knew the precise circumstances of the situation. He was clearly of a certain age. Clearly upset. I’m saying I understand why he was upset. And I’m saying the police should be able to sort out and calm a situation down and not end up arresting a upstanding citizen who was offended by their mistake.
It DOES suck. I’m not a famous professor but consider myself fairly non-threatening along the lines of Dr. Gates. I’ve been mildly abused by cops in Florida, refused service multiple times in Pennsylvania (cabs at the airport for crissakes), conveniently shuttled to an empty back room when front tables are available in NJ (ALL THE TIME). Every time it happens, it really sucks and I feel like sh*t. It’s hard to shake. I’m sure that Dr. Gates has endured much more and way worse over his lifetime, so his reaction in my opinion was within reason. This kind of crap totally sucks and I have a hard time understanding why people want so hard to excuse the behavior of Ms. Whalen and the police in this case.
