  1. DH- I am an equal opportunity laugher. I haven’t seen it but I’d probably laugh at it- but then again, I don’t go to Bill Maher for deep intellectual thought either.

I don’t make fun of people’s faith- or non-belief. But the things that are done in the name of religion- that’s fair game. There’s always that disconnect between for example, the teachings of Christ and how believers follow them. Sometimes religious people make the worst Christians (or Muslims or Jews for that matter).

  3. Biff,
The relevance both books is that they argue for the existence of God without relying on the assumptions (i.e. faith) or ‘propaganda’ you disparage.
The Antony Flew book is that it is an attempt by a formerly atheist philosophy professor to argue that the balance of evidence supports the existence of God. He does not feel that he has had any personal experience of faith.

  4. jessi, a nerighbor sold one at a stoop sale a few months ago and said they couldntt get it to work. the program was u buy two, one for an african kid in africa then u get one to donate here or keep. it was just 5 bux i got it for and it works to browse online, nothing more. maybe practise my abc’s and basic math, but that is all it offers. it’s sturdy tho! and u can spill beer on the keyboard and it wipes right off.

  5. Sixyears – how are US History essays evaluated? is it purely content or is spelling, grammar et all taken into account as well?

Content, analytical thinking, and organization. Grammar and spelling don’t count at all on the rubric we’re given.

Kensingtonian – it’s true, many of our students are immigrants, but there is practically no difference between immigrant and American-born students in writing ability. It’s unfashionable to teach English grammar in our elementary schools, so American-born students don’t learn it. Immigrants do (in their home countries or ESL classes) so it balances out. As you know, your alma mater tends to attract students more motivated than average – I’d say this is especially true among our immigrant population.

The real difference is the level and variety of vocabulary the parents use at home (whether English or some other language), which prepares kids to write well no matter where they came from. Many of our immigrant students, especially those from the former USSR, have very well-educated parents. Even if the family don’t speak English at all in the home, it still helps the kids do well in school.

  6. Arkady, that certainly sounds counterintuitive and an interesting study. Maybe the religious ones clinging on the most to life are the ones not expecting to go to heaven but rather to the other place. 🙂

Randi, I hope you’re serious. It would be great if you could make it. We’re a fun and very friendly crowd, despite the impression of us you might get here.
