Dibs and Gemini,
Another in agreement. I call it the Women’s Stealth Umbrella Wars everytime it rains. And I always feel like a rube as I walk along with my arm upstretched to get the umbrella to above-head height, meanwhile women continually come within an inch of my eye with their umbrella spokes, nary an apology or a backwards glance in sight. (Men really don’t do this for the most part in my experience) And I think again about how much I dislike so much about women sometimes.
There’s both a J Crew and a Banana republic near me in Rockefeller Plaza. i always though banana was way overpriced for what it is and J crew was far more reasonable.
If you religiously go to Syms (there’s one at park & 54) you can actually find real nice clothes at incredibly low prices. I bought a Karl Lagerfeld cashmere/wool suit once for about $230
Oh my god, Rob, I would SO love to take you shopping. I am the Goddess of reasonably priced, hip but work-appropriate clothing for men. I will get you started with Century 21, Filene’s Basement (you have to dig a bit) and Loehman’s. But you’d be surprised at the great sales they have going at JCrew and Banana for men right now.
I third Uniqlo but Rob says he doesn’t like it. Uniqlo quality is good for the (new) price, as Rob discovered with the socks. Plenty of generic looking basics there, you don’t have to wear the wierd stuff (like, you know, the awesome ’80s retro pastel plaids from Opening Ceremony).
Marshalls also good, I second that. Also Century 21, especially on sale. Their men’s is the best.
You will find better quality used menswear in the turnabout and charity thrift shops of the Upper East Side. Housing Works is excellent.
I’ve also had great luck with Etsy’s vintage clothes, but it may not be right for men looking to “blend in.” You can sometimes get good bargains on eBay, but I also find there’s always something wrong with the item I didn’t know about (smell, etc.) that makes it unwearable.
Garage sales? Free boxes? Oh right you already tried that. There’s some really cheap places in Bushwick but it’s probably not worth the trip out.
Buying new clothes is the fastest way to destroy your budget though. Used is better.

I am on a trivia rage today.
Tying it into Rob’s question…..
What stretch of a long street in Brooklyn was once “the” location in Brooklyn for men’s clothing stores?
I should restrain myself, I’m going to run out of trivia.

M4L, that is a great answer. I think you’re right.
Next:
If you try to fail, and succeed, which have you done?
Biff, bread.
cant complain it aint sliced when there’s no bread to eat b4 then
sam, I still have my kids to keep young…although they are making me age very quickly.
Next stupid question for all to ignore:
What was the best thing before sliced bread?

Biff, you need grandkids to help you keep young.
Oops, did that just make you feel old?
