New York Magazine takes a look inside Persons of Interest, the hipster barbershop we’ve been tracking at 299 Smith Street in Carroll Gardens since August. The storefront had been vacant since Sal, who owned a barbershop there, passed away. As a nod to the past, Persons of Interest kept the original barber chairs, the pole, and the tropical Day-Glo mural. But the $20 dollar haircuts are a thing of the past; cuts are now $40, but come with a massage and free beers.

  1. Sorry, rob, but you are incorrect and your dentist is subject to receiving a citation from the State Liquor Authority for “selling” alcohol without a license. If anything of value goes in one direction and alcohol goes the other way, it’s a sale.

For the record, I pay $19.50 for my haircuts, inclusive of a 35% tip.

  2. If there are folks willing to pay 40 to100 dollars for a hair cut, How bout this , i’ll cut your hair for 20 bucks, and each cut comes with a tall cup of cherry kool-aid!Besides,it’s less likely that i will be DRUNK after cutting my tenth or so head.

  3. this is a prime example of all the yuppification spreading throughout brooklyn. old skool neighborhood joints getting replaced by yuppie transplants who’s parents forked out the dough for their kids to start an obnoxious, trendy, and overpriced business.

Also, your dentist offers wine and you complain about yuppification? What kind of dentist offers wine when you go for a cleaning???

i dont complain about yuppification in soho where his office is located. but the prices arent much different than ghetto dentists really. i guess? insurance has covered most things ive gotten done there for the most part. and a bunch of celebrities even go there 🙂 plus they give you as much laughing gas as you want and they dont play shitty music and ive never seen children in the waiting room. i think they only work on adults.

  5. It’s double, not quintupled. And $40 isn’t that much for a haircut, especially in that neighborhood (especially if you’re getting a beer or two with it). There are plenty of places that charge $80-$100 (and up). Also, your dentist offers wine and you complain about yuppification? What kind of dentist offers wine when you go for a cleaning???

  6. they do not have to apply for a liquor license for that as it would be considered a gratis gift. they offer wine in my dentist’s office waiting room and i highly doubt he has a liquor license. It’s not you get billed for the wine. i’d imagine no one is getting bill for the free beer here.

fjorder, you can try all you want, but im totally uninsultable.
