New York Magazine takes a look inside Persons of Interest, the hipster barbershop we’ve been tracking at 299 Smith Street in Carroll Gardens since August. The storefront had been vacant since Sal, who owned a barbershop there, passed away. As a nod to the past, Persons of Interest kept the original barber chairs, the pole, and the tropical Day-Glo mural. But the $20 dollar haircuts are a thing of the past; cuts are now $40, but come with a massage and free beers.

  1. For $14 plus tip, try Lana’s Barbership on Henry Street between Union and Sackett Streets. Lots of magazines and papers to read. Best to call Lana to see how crowded she is to reduce wait.

    Address: 523 Henry Street (Sackett-Union)
    Phone: (718) 596-5603
    Closed Sunday and Monday.

Lana gives a basic haircut, using either scissors or an electric clipper. Nothing fancy but you come out looking good. Come more than once, and Lana gives you a big greeting. A friendly neighborhood place.

    Happy clipping…

  2. I like “The Gamesman” in the back of the lobby of the office building at 105 Court Street. 14 bucks. Sinatra on the stereo.

Frank is the owner, the chatty guy in the chair near the door. Hassan is the quiet guy against the side wall. Both do a fine job, especially if you go off-peak and they can take their time. Margaret (Frank’s daughter?) does manicures and the like, if that is your thing.

Hey, can anyone suggest a barber in Cobble Hill/Carroll Gardens who IS cheap but does a nice job with men’s haircuts?

Jeffrey @ SuperCuts. If Jeff is busy and backed up too much to wait, or not there, walk out.

  4. “Sorry, rob, but you are incorrect and your dentist is subject to receiving a citation from the State Liquor Authority for “selling” alcohol without a license. If anything of value goes in one direction and alcohol goes the other way, it’s a sale.”

Sweet – if the SLA weren’t a bunch of lazy mofos they could start up in Washington Heights and bust all the barbershops up there where people get wasted all day/night, and slowly work their way down to soho/carroll gardens.
