Smith Street has a new coffee place as of this morning. A tipster walked by the just-opened Ecopolis at 180 Smith Street, in the ground floor of the building we’ve been calling 311 Warren Street as it’s risen on the former vacant lot over the past couple of years. The coffee shop was opened by the building’s developers, who also have a non-profit based on the second floor; the upper floors are all residential. The new space has a light, modern vibe according to the tipster. Anyone stop in yet? How’s the coffee? GMAP

I’ve walked out of coffee shops on more than one occasion because there were no tables, and I wanted to enjoy my espresso sitting down, out of a proper cup rather than in a paper to-go cup. Kinda sucks.
if you werent such a ninny you’d walk right up to them hogging the tables with their “work”, slam your coffee on the table, and tell them to scram!

@neilw – there was definitely a cute little garden on the corner here, right by the train exit, with tons of flowers and trees. Up the block a bit, before Monster Mutt, was a giant community garden too. It doesn’t feel like it’s been ten years, but it might be.
“The profitability of this business is in part tied to table turns. If laptop leeches monopolize the tables, there should be a limit put on them.”
Totally agree. I’ve walked out of coffee shops on more than one occasion because there were no tables, and I wanted to enjoy my espresso sitting down, out of a proper cup rather than in a paper to-go cup. Kinda sucks.

@eatbrooklynfood – you’re thinking of the spot up Warren St. a little bit, where the hideous mansard-roofed places are (used to be a church up until the 60’s). This was a vacant lot for the last 10 years.
I stopped in this morning – super nice people. Happy to see them in there.
bococaloca sounds like the leech *Rob* was ranting about…and that name(bococa) is not gonna win her any love here.
I like Cafe Peddlar, but they are always packed. I like Clover’s as a place to sit and do work (not to mention the good coffee), but they have restricted laptop use at multiple tables and have cut their hours sharply. I’m up for trying the new place in the hopes of finding a new spot.
The Fall Cafe is the greatest.
It’s like a college cafe.
In every way.
It’s was an early presence in the Carroll Gardens rejuvenation.
And it hasn’t change much at all.
Thankfully.
