gates-rape-0610.jpgLast week, we broke the disturbing news that a woman was raped at the corner of Gates Avenue and Downing Street in Clinton Hill in the early morning hours of June 17th. The Times’ Local blog attended the 88th Precinct’s Community Meeting last night and provides more details on the incident. At around 4:45 a.m. a black male, approximately 35-40 years old and 180 pounds, apparently propositioned a 27-year-old woman on the corner who proceeded to get into his car where he proceeded to rape her at knife point; the woman was taken to Woodhull Hospital. If anyone has information that could help the investigation, call 1-800-577-TIPS.

  1. Actually, my first thought when I saw the sketch was that it looked like a skinny Forrest Whitaker. So DH isn’t the only one!

As for Rob’s advice, it’s good advice — and carrying your house keys in your fist, so that the keys are sticking out between your fingers, also makes a fine weapon.

  2. “Was it ever confirmed that this woman was a prostitute?”

    Um…Okay…

4:45 AM. Corner. Proposition. Auto entry. Trick whooped. Bed made and slept in. Tough love.

  3. re: “A trick gone wrong”

and if you go into a store and steal at knifepoint, it’s not grand larceny — it’s just a shopping trip gone wrong!

  4. As somebody who lives in said neighborhood I do take some comfort from the circumstances as callous as that might sound. I feel terrible for the victim, as this is not something that should ever befall anyone, but in terms of the impact to my life and my family’s life it does make a difference that the victim got into a car at 4:45 AM rather than being assaulted out of the blue by a potential serial rapist. Its awful to have to make those kinds of calculations but there it is. Why there would be streetwalking in this area is a mystery that I would like to know the answer to as well.

  5. Then count me in the fail column as well, because that’s exactly how I understood your post. I’m with Mopar; even if the woman is a prostitute, what happened isn’t a failure to pay. She was threatened with a weapon, and sexually assaulted. Rapists may pick prostitutes because they are on the street and vulnerable to assault, and they might pick on any lone woman on a deserted street for the same reason.
I don’t agree that one should feel safer because of the status of the victim.

  6. HA dipster no!!! i said the debate that caroll gardens or clinton hill or any neighborhood is a ghetto is irrelvant. not the circumstances of the rape!
