Last week, we broke the disturbing news that a woman was raped at the corner of Gates Avenue and Downing Street in Clinton Hill in the early morning hours of June 17th. The Times’ Local blog attended the 88th Precinct’s Community Meeting last night and provides more details on the incident. At around 4:45 a.m. a black male, approximately 35-40 years old and 180 pounds, apparently propositioned a 27-year-old woman on the corner who proceeded to get into his car where he proceeded to rape her at knife point; the woman was taken to Woodhull Hospital. If anyone has information that could help the investigation, call 1-800-577-TIPS.

wasder, shit happens anywhere anytime. if more incidents occurred, I would be whipping out the “F” word. btw, my “F” word is most oft used for the “look” and “feel” of those blocks cause I dont think they’re unsafe
M4L–fire away with the F word. This is certainly the kind of headline that warrants it. I am an optimist but not a delusional optimist. I believe this neighborhood is in the midst of a very positive transition but clearly entrenched criminal elements remain.
It’s often the case that serial murderers and rapists pick on prostitutes AS WELL AS regular women. The status of the victim in no way makes this a “less worrisome” crime. I feel bad for the victim too, perhaps even more so if she is a prostitute. I also feel bad for bus drivers, cooks and others who get home in the wee hours and are exposed to dangers such as this. I have the luxury of taking a cab, which is what I do.
Wasder, I’m biting my tongue on the “F” word
there have been a couple of instances on the stretch of gates between grand & classon – a gay male friend of mine was physically (& verbally) assaulted the other day at gates & classon.
Rob, colonel, I am sure you are right and yet I am still surprised at this actual location, which while near a corner where drug dealing is prevalent is still a quiet and seemingly out of the way corner.
Wasder, pushers and pimps go together like peanut butter and jelly. The fact that drug dealing is still rampant in this same area, makes it no small surprise that you’d find streetwalkers also.
quote:
Just don’t get why certain corners or blocks become known for streetwalking.
a lot of times it’s where the drugs are. and sometimes the drugs are in sleepy residential areas. and metrocards aint cheap these days.
*rob*
Yes there is a disconnect but to me its more of a disconnect between the residential nature of the street and streetwalking. I am more used to the concept of streetwalking in industrial areas (say Gowanus) or on busier commercial streets. Just don’t get why certain corners or blocks become known for streetwalking.
I don’t see why the comps of the houses have anything to do with it?
