We’ve gotten several emails about the signage that has gone up on the restaurant at 68 Bergen, the Italian restaurant now called Broken English. Everything looks ready to go, but they weren’t seating people when we went by to snap this photo over the weekend. We’d expect this one to be fully open this week!

  1. Cgar, the restaurant was formerly a garage where Vinnie’s yellow Hummer used to rest sometimes. Iron works were carried out there, too. They just blew out the garage door and installed the doors and windows (which I assumed were made at Vinnie’s)

  2. Random bits of gathered knowledge (I live on that block): the building, if I am not mistaken, is owned by none other than Mr. Vinnie himself of Vinnie’s Ironworks (who is 1. is Italian from Italy 2. speaks in ‘broken English,’ as do my parents and 3. owns or did own a lot of real estate in the neighborhood). He used to park his yellow hummer there, and I saw him in the not-yet-open laundromat. I’m sure he’s fine with the name of the place.

  3. Whether the owner has the ‘right’ to be self-hating or not, the name is offensive and the location will be his undoing. I for one will be sure to urge all I know not to patronize. Mismatched chairs makes me think customers get complimentary fedoras or trucker caps. Next.

  4. My gf and I stuck our heads in there on Sun night. The owner/chef just about ran over to us to say they weren’t open. He was kind of rude actually. Poor first impression in our book.

  5. “What am I missing??? Where??? …Confused. Very confused. Always very confused.”–
just click on the GMAP link and see. really not hard to find. Even a lawyer should be able to figure it out.

  6. If the first day is any indication, this place should do very well in this location. Sampled the limited menu on Sunday. Everything was great. Did not have that “just opened” chaotic feel!
