Streetlevel: A New Bar Coming to Cortelyou

The folks at Ditmas Park’s popular Farm on Adderley restaurant noticed as many folks were lining up for barstools as tables, so they decided what the ever-hippening neighborhood needed was a bar. Later this month, on the same block, they’ll welcome their new drinking establishment, a hybrid business that will operate as a flower shop during the day—yes you can sit among the roses and sip wine at night, too. Adderley owners Allison and Gary Jonas and their partner Justin Israelson just aren’t sure what to call the place. They’re thinking Monkey’s Wedding—referring to the times when the weather’s both raining and sunny. You guys got any ideas?
There is a flower shop on Cortelyou, right across from the entrance to the subway, but it’s no better than a deli, mostly carnations and mums. I welcome the addition!
I vote for Monkey’ s Wedding. It is in line with the Farm’s name, also derived from a South African Expression. But Stem is noteworthy. Or Juniper? ( I’m gin-obsessed )
stem is a bit gay. it clearly should be called Nectar
Stem is truly inspired. They’d be crazy not to jump at the suggestion.
I don’t think Gary is counting on the flowers for survival. I think it’s just a nice touch. Bring in a little extra cash during the day. Make the spot looks beautiful. Add to the overall gentrification of Cortelyou Road.
Have to say, there have been MANY times I’ve wished for a real flower shop (not a bodega, thank you). And I would happily plunk down my cash for quality pickings. Nothing makes a big old Victorian house sparkle like a vase full of hydrangeas or snapdragons in the foyer.
twee: too sweet for words, contraction of “Tweety Bird”

There was a store on court street in Cobble Hill for many many years called ‘Monkeys Wedding’, then it opened a sister store across the street called ‘The Laughing Giraffe at the Monkeys Wedding’..it is a South African phrase.
I thought it was going to be called Edelweiss (at least that’s what the Ditmas Park Blog reported the trade name would be) but I guess not. The location used to be a furniture store called Cortelyou Vintage, which wouldn’t be a bad name for a bar either.
Yes, the area does need another bar. It’s near-impossible to get a comfortable seat at the bar at the Farm on Adderley, and 773 and Visions Lounge are not exactly places to take a date. Vox Pop has beer and wine but isn’t really a bar.
what is “twee”
Anything with “Monkey” in the title is automatically twee enough to make you vomit. And you don’t want to encourage vomiting in bars, even with handily placed flowerpots. The concept is twee enough (although I love it, but then I am a chick and also not a bar-type-person). I love ‘Stem,’ nobody will top that one so I won’t even try. It’s clever without being twee.
