This old brick house at 173 Crown Street in Crown Heights hit the market a year ago with Corcoran at an asking price of $799,000; by October the price had been reduced to $649,000. Then early last month, Brown Harris Stevens took over the listing and raised the price back up to $789,000. Last week, the price was reduced again to $739,000. Sounds to us like an offer in the high $600’s would get this done. It’s a charming house. Any takers?

  1. Dave, have you checked out Paint Library, Collection II? They have a huge number of Victorian-type shades. They just started selling in the U.S. They are available through Stark at the D&D Building in Manhattan. If you call, they will send over a color card and they have sample pots of every color. I haven’t tried them yet, but I am planning on it when we get to that stage.

  2. DIBS I used Farrow and Ball “Dorset Cream” for my dark north-facing living room wall with creamy-white (Pointing) woodwork and like the color a lot. I’d love to have some excuse to use F&B’s “Orangery”. Robins egg blue is a nice color but I think a bit cold for a living room. And it’s super trendy right now which I fear means it will be really out soon.

yeah, I’ve actually gone to a couple of open houses in Jackson Heights and have been intrigued. I like the nabe. the prices are even starting to come down there a bit….

my one question about jackson heights was the schools, so it’s good to hear that they’re good (at least elementary)

  4. Thanks y’all — especially oneeasternparkway — for all the keen insights into this house and into the factors to consider.

I, too, had the house on my list to visit at an open house, but I didn’t make it.

I’d like to get to know the neighborhood. Is it largely African-Caribbean and Hasidic?

  5. Well, aren’t you just righteous and virtuous? I am not moving someplace that’s not at least 2,400sf, and that’s final. I like empty spaces, lazy Sundays and clean closets, and there is nothing you can do about it. As long as I remember to turn off the faucet while I brush my teeth, I’ve done my bit.

Maly, I take back every vile thing I ever spewed at you. You’re my hero.

  6. Plenty of bigger houses for sale at this price in Bed Stuy. I have even heard of one or two in move-in condition. But mostly they all have issues and $60,000 is getting off light. Have you checked the pre-war coops in Jackson Heights? They’re lovely with fireplaces and elevators and in the 500s. The elementary school there is good, you can test into Hunter in junior high.
