House of the Day: 173 Crown Street
This old brick house at 173 Crown Street in Crown Heights hit the market a year ago with Corcoran at an asking price of $799,000; by October the price had been reduced to $649,000. Sounds to us like an offer in the high $600’s would get this done. It’s a charming house. Any takers?

Panelling could be a lincrusta paper, which is much thicker than ordinary wall paper, and was often used in these situations. Stuff lasts forever if taken care of correctly. Leather is also a possibility, as well.
Neighborhood is much more Caribbean and African American than Hasidic. The Hasidic part of the neighborhood really starts east of New York Ave. The proximity of Medgar Evers means some of your neighbors may be professors there, and I find the neighborhood to be a great little enclave of working people who have been there a long time. The streets are always full of people sweeping up, and most of the front yards are full of flowering plants and landscaped yards.
Yeah, probably leather.
a decorative, thick paper….perhaps tooled leather. Difficult to tell. It was peeling up in places.

Embossed paper?!!!
I saw the place a month or so ago. Needs a lot of work. Well north of 60k. And the paneling in the dining room isn’t paneling. It’s embossed paper. I’m single with no kids and considered this place but in the end you have a 2 bedroom one bath and garage for 770k (if you pay high 6’s as Brownstoner suggests [which would be nuts]).
I suspect that I may be lazy about this and just go to Benjamin Moore and pick something out there locally.
Thanks everyone. I am getting bored with the rather drab yellow.
mopar, you should come by some evening and let me know what you think.
DIBS, only F&B does. You can see the colors and order in person at the retail store in Soho, order online, or order at the D&D Building through someone with a resale license. They make them up in Canada and ship them directly to your house. It takes at least a week to get an order.
Orangery is close to what I used in Philly…more of a Mango, even.
I like the Orangery, Print Room Yellow, Hay, Blue ground, and Chinese Blue
