A bunch of news outlets covered the groundbreaking at the new skating rink in Prospect Park, which will replace the old Wollman Rink. $54 million of the total $70 million needed has been raised for the project, which includes a LEED-certified green building, two outdoor skating rinks, and the restoration of the original landscape design. Five acres will also be added to the lake as well as three adjacent acres of park land. This is scaled back from last year’s plan, which included “rooftop recreation.” Despite that, and despite the shortage of funds, those involved feel confident the plans will pull through. Says Prospect Park Alliance spokesman Eugene Patron, “We’re confident that the rest of the money will be coming in. We have great momentum here.

“Looking forward to a Plusa skating evening when this is finished. What do you think, Cobblesnaps?”
Fantastic idea, DCB!
ice skating is just not fun. end of story.
This is a beautiful part of the park and I am really happy that there will be a rink there next year, along with the other improvements. And Rob, this is not your blonde-blue-eyed ice-skating crowd. Real Brooklyn polyglot–white, black, latino, Asian and Hassidic kids and grownups. Great mix of music on the rink and cheap food from the snack bar–hope it stays that way!
70 million dollars to build 2 skating rinks that are only usable 4 months out of the year. Wouldn’t it have been cost effective to make one of them an indoor rink that way they could collect revenue all year round?
Tod Williams and Billie Tsien are the architects. That’s a promising sign.
ive been ice skating three times in my life and 2 of those three times i sprained my ankle REALLY badly. ice skating is one of those things that’s not particularly hard the first time you do it, but it’s easy to know how to pace yourself and know what NOT to do i guess. all three of those times were in rockefeller center tho and sometimes it’s too packed for it to even be in any fun. oh yeah and dont let you on the ice with your shoes :-/

Those machines are called Zambonies, not tractors.

70 million dollars for that? get the fuck out of here. that is insane. i hope some little park slope blonde child goes all The Good Son on that ice.

I don’t know about DIBS, but I haven’t ice skated in over 50 years. Nevertheless, I’m enthusiastic about this project because of the restoration of the lake shore and the fact that I won’t have to look at the excruciatingly ugly Wollman rink if I turn left after walking into the park at the Lincoln Road entrance.
