Fulton Grand Bar Opens Tomorrow. For Reals.
Last time we announced that the Fulton Grand bar was opening the next day, it turned out not to be true. That happens occasionally with word-of-mouth tips. Last time we announced that the Fulton Grand bar was opening the next day, it turned out not to be true. That happens occasionally with word-of-mouth tips. Last night, though, we received an email from the owner of the bar assuring us that opening day would in fact be tomorrow, Wednesday, August 4th. What’s more, we’ve been told that the new watering hole (located, not surprisingly, at the corner of Fulton Street and Grand Avenue in Clinton Hill) will be offering happy hour prices all night long. See you there.

This is my neck of the woods too and definitely marks a change for the general area. 4th Ave Pub people, welcome to the nabe! The increase in foot traffic alone will likely attract other businesses though I think the real indicator of change will be when the food coop opens. These are 2 really great developments.
Ah but even in bad times we drink! More seriously, there has been a demographic shift in the immediate neighborhood, more students and more middle aged, middle class home owners, which would seem to be able to sustain more licit commercial activity in this immediate area. Fingers crossed.
And BHO, sorry you did take a crack at this bar and the immediate area in your first response with your Bermuda Triangle comment. Which is your right to make, but don’t try to go all impartial and intellectual on us when we call you on it!
A bar will succeed at this location. A restaurant restaurant may not. I think anyways.
The fact that any business is investing in the block bordered by Grand, Putnam and Downing which has historically been the most run down and prone to gun crime in the area is a near miracle. Now we have somebody investing a ton of money into the interior of this bar and the Food Co-op coming to this very same block. I really thought that this would be the last location to see revival. To me this is the indication that people are ready to invest in this area in general.
But really what we should do is revive this thread in a year and see who was right.
“general trend in the nine years I’ve lived here is for very slow development…I find it odd for BHO to suggest that a bar will fail.”
Much better times during those previous nine years, much of them hyperinflated by housing and credit. But there’s no free lunch. Prepare yourself for slow deleveraging and contraction. We are deflating.
I didn’t intend to take a shot at this particular bar (more power too ’em and good luck). I’m just giving my usual call about the local economy and all these business failures we see on here almost daily it seems. Yeah, some new ones start up but what’s the net? There appears to be a lot of turnover.

I would find it hard to believe that any resident of the area bounded by Grand, Atlantic, Classon and Gates would find argument with the notion that this area was underserved by retail over the last decade. While I mostly agree with your overarching assessment of the broader economy there can in fact be local variations. Most of the areas where we are seeing mom and pop failures are the areas that got overly saturated with those kinds of stores (5th Ave, Court Street etc) so that competition weeded out the weaker entries. Here in my neighborhood the demand is high and the supply is low, so no matter if this particular business succeeds or not I am highly confident of the general direction of the retail situation in general over the next year.
That is an opinion. “underserved” by and to whom? You’ll get your improvement in the long term but not without some short term disappointment. You can’t have a shitty broader economy and a sustained, booming local economy. There’s only one economic pie from which we all take slices from.

Hey blowfish! Great to see you. Thanks for the offer. I have however completely finished my bluestone project. I begged and borrowed just enough from various construction sites and friends etc and now have a beautiful bluestone patio in the back of my yard as well as a curving bluestone wall. So cool. I really think I should post some before and after garden renovation photos because its pretty dramatic.
Obviously from my monicker I have an interest in this area (the third cross street of this bar is Putnam Avenue). While it could very well be that an individual business fails, the general trend in the nine years I’ve lived here is for very slow development. Clinton Hill in this area has been underserved. Businesses have failed, of course, – Brown Betty, the cafe run by Renee Collymore in part of space to be occupied by the Greene Hill Food Coop, Bodegas. Others, such as Kush, and Michael Allen’s and Outpost have been around for a few years. That said I find it odd for BHO to suggest that a bar will fail. Hot Bird on the corner of Clinton and Atlantic is very busy. I have heard the owners of this new bar have had success in other locations. And every since the closing of Grand 275 I have been waiting for a new bar to give my allegiance to.
That said, I am not a small businessman and I always marvel at the leap of faith it must be to open such a bar or restaurant. Welcome to them.
