Dirty, one time I was coming out of Almacen, and saw police tape in an intersection and people crowded around and police all over the place and I thought OH MY GOD there’s been a shooting. It happens EVEN HERE.
No. A driver had hit and injured but not killed a lap dog.
Yes, bessie, I have. What works in Asia WILL NOT work here because so many people think their “spce” is well beyond their car. In Asia, cars will come within inches of each other as part of the regular flow of trafic.
That’s not going to sit well with a lot of people here simply because they are stupid and uncivilized.
I worked valet but never driven a cab!!!!! I do sometimes work as a PLUSA car service though.
Phillip Glass used to drive cabs. One night, he had a passenger who told him he was the spitting image of the avant-garde composer, Phillip Glass. I think he stopped driving cabs shortly after that.
Also, I have milked goats, but never herded them and I still don’t know how to drive a car.
Has anyone ever been on the road in Mumbai? There’s a certain chaotic driving style that reminds me of some of the cab drivers in NYC. the other traffic is largely rickshaws (like a minibike with a 3 seater cart atteched to it), mini trucks, bullocks, etc. I think many of the NYC driveers aren’t so much lacking driving experience as having learned to drive in a distinctly different environment.
I have heard that auto insurers in France will not cover accidents occurring on the Arch de Triomphe traffic circle in Paris. Too many accidents!
I thought the goat-herding reference was intended for a certain poster on this site, rather than a bigoted rant. I may be wrong, however. I must say I was in a car driven by an older man from Trinidad the other day and I have never been so terrified in my life, but I don’t know if either of those factors caused the bad driving (although presumably the pace of traffic is slower there than here in NY and you can do things like make a sudden u-turn in the middle of a major street (Empire Blvd. in this case) without risking everyone’s lives).
The French are usually very good drivers in my experience, particularly in urban settings.
DIBS, I too love the earlier 19th century wood houses and prefer them over brownstones. I’m crazy for them.
I’ve had only one native NYC cab driver since moving here too. Why would anyone think goat or sheep herding isn’t a real job for people in some countries? Wool is a huge important textile in the middle east for exports. Big business. But recent immigrants may very well have been driving cars regularly in their home countries, they didn’t have to be herding goats to become bad drivers. It’s a cultural difference more than a lack of driving experience. Anybody who has traveled to 3rd world countries knows the roads there are lawless. Just like Brooklyn. Who exactly enforces laws for drivers here? Why have road rules at all?
I think I’ve only had ONE native New Yorker and US born cab driver since I came here in 1994.
I was returning from LaGuardia to my place on the UES and he showed me the short route (Hoyt to Crescent) to the Queeensborough Bridge.
