We wondered if the space at 117 Court was cursed but even this is hard to believe: As BHB reported last night, Danny’s on Court, the cafe that replaced the short lived F. Martinella, appears to be closed after just two weeks! A tipster pointed they were closed over the holiday weekend, and sure enough, there is a sign up promoting this now debatable ‘prime retail space.’ Anyone know what’s up?

  1. Bowl of dicks, I have to take exception to the notion that the only people who patronize the movie theater are lower income “urban” types. You didn’t say that, but the implication was certainly there. I go there as often as I go to the movies, and see all kinds of people there. I have pretty eclectic movie tastes, and see a bit of everything, and have yet to be in a “talk back” audience, or a rowdy audience of any kind. It’s a New York City movie theatre, with a mixture of most kinds of people. It’s not the Angelika theatre, but so what? It’s hardly downscale.

  2. It may not be upscale or expensive food, but it’s a “foreign” concept to the folks who patronize the movie theatre. There is a reason all the fast food and Chinese joints along that stretch are packed every night.

  3. I used to walk this stretch twice a day for 4 years. IMO, no way would a noodle/dumpling shop do well here. Sorry but that movie theatre across the street is not of the upscale variety. It is a genuine talk-back. This stretch caters to the courts during the day and the movie crowd at night. As someone mentioned, there are already a few well established delis in the immediate area to serve the courts. Sadly, I think fast food is the only thing that would succeed at this location.

  4. BNB said he didn’t have insurance. He tore down the restaurant (really — the whole family was at it) and took forever building the condos which NEVER sold or rented (at least not through the broker at $8500/month) and it has appeared that the building has Asian families in it — maybe his.

Maybe not just like Ollie’s since Ollie’s just filed for bankruptcy in March and shut their 84th and Broadway location.

But yeah, noodles/dumplings would be a good bet. But it has to be a destination of sorts, I think. These business owners aren’t very creative sometimes. Being in Brooklyn combined with the weak economy, business owners need to think a littler harder (or at all?) about what would bring people to their establishments and try to be a little original.
