We wondered if the space at 117 Court was cursed but even this is hard to believe: As BHB reported last night, Danny’s on Court, the cafe that replaced the short lived F. Martinella, appears to be closed after just two weeks! A tipster pointed they were closed over the holiday weekend, and sure enough, there is a sign up promoting this now debatable ‘prime retail space.’ Anyone know what’s up?

  1. “you have no clue. you obviously don’t live there.”

I lived in that nabe for 4 years. I stand corrected about the B+N being another anchor – which it is. But honestly, I never saw much diversity in B+N or TJ’s either!!!! Just sayin.

  2. “If the place was as bad as people say, it would be closed. It’s not.”

Really? Why would it be closed? and who would close it?

If you had couched your initial statement with “in my experience…” fine; but you made it like you were an authority on the theater and frankly there is much anecdotal and more concrete evidence to point to the conclusion that your experience is not the norm.

  3. Well, fsrg, for your information, I haven’t been to a movie in that theatre where that took place. Guess I missed it, or maybe my movie tastes aren’t as eclectic as I think they are, or I don’t go when “they” go. But that is my experience, and I’m sticking by it. I have seen very popular shoot-em-up movies in that theatre, and it hasn’t been rowdy. What can I say? Maybe the rowdies only go opening night, cause that’s not when I see popular flicks. I’m not doing anyone a disservice, I’m just presenting it as I have experienced it. If the place was as bad as people say, it would be closed. It’s not.

  4. Ok BOD probably over stated the limited demographics patronizing the movie theater and the area in general; but Montrose you are going equally far the other way:

“I have pretty eclectic movie tastes, and see a bit of everything, and have yet to be in a “talk back” audience, or a rowdy audience of any kind.”

Come on – the Court St theater is DEFINITLY a rowdier than usual movie theater and their have been any number of community complaints regarding the crowds as well as police-required incidents within the theater itself. Look I find BOD euphemisms for Black people somewhat offensive and certainly pathetic, but MM you are doing no one any service by claiming something that isnt true.

  5. I think it’s possible to figure out an alternative to traditional fast food that doesn’t break the bank, either, thereby appealing to the day workers and the evening people coming out of the movies. The fast food places are there mostly to serve the office workers. If one was to go fastfood in this space, about the only thing we don’t have over there is a Wendy’s.

I still say, because that is the main theatre I go to when I go to the movies, that all kinds of people patronize the theater. BOD is selling the area short. There’s also another tenant in the building, Barnes and Noble, which also has a large patronage of all kinds of people of every income and persuasion. The Starbucks in there is always packed, and since you have to eat something to stay in there, and nothing in there is cheap, it stands to reason that the income levels needed to move across the street do shop in the area, day and night. Danny’s may not have had the right merchandise, the right appeal, the layout, or stayed open long enough. I don’t know. Hopefully someone will figure out the best thing to do with the space, and I hope it is something edible.

  6. If you are going to call a location cursed, can you please be just a tad bit more specific? Is this a Witchcraft curse or a Creole Voo Doo curse? It makes a big difference in determining how to counteract it.

  7. BOD – why is the movie theater the “anchor” of Court and Atlantic? you could just as easily say the Barnes and Noble or TJ’s is the “anchor”. you have no clue. you obviously don’t live there.

  8. and regarding the movie theater talk-back nonsense … yes if you go see a horror flick or some other crap you will get the rowdy, hooping and hollering types mainly on the weekends. when i’m worried about that i go see the film at cobble him cinema or battery park city to avoid any frustrations. but this rowdy element is never the case in every showing for every movie. anyway it’s just something to deal with. and as for every local business being beholden to these rowdy youths for their business plan … well I don’t think Trader Joe’s has that kind of issue.

  9. MM you bet the implication was there. That said, I am not commenting on whether or not I think that movie theatre is good/bad for the area. My comments were regarding the types of establishments that can realistically be supported by the movie theatre, which is the anchor on that stretch of Court St…….
