Claudia Rothchild, the founder of a latex clothes and lingerie company called Klawtex, was denied a lease to open a high-end costume shop at Shops at the Loom, the creative commercial space on Flushing Avenue. According to a report by DNAinfo, the landlords thought the owner and the business were “too sexual for the space,” which violated their religious beliefs. Rothchild says she did not intend to sell provocative ware at the store, only high-end costume clothing. She already paid a security deposit and three months’ rent before she received the news she couldn’t move in. As Rothchild told DNAinfo, “If they have this fundamentalist religious criteria for their space, they have to make that selection criteria known before in writing.” The broker returned the three months’ rent, but Rothchild has yet to receive her security deposit of $1,900.
