jstireshop42011.jpgLast week Fort Greene-Clinton Hill Patch reported that the DOB had shut down F+S Tires, which has been on the corner of Fulton and South Oxford for 26 years, because it didn’t have an appropriate Certificate of Occupancy and had racked up around $25,000 in fines. Today Councilwoman Tish James sent out a press release saying saying she was in support of F+S’s owners, who “arrived before the recent renaissance” in the area and are now “struggling for survival amid specialty food shops, real estate offices and boutiques.” A hearing about the violations is scheduled for the middle of next month. 1. Tish James is weak. She’s gunning for Christine Quinn’s job these days. She’ll probably starting kissing up to Ratner to get some money for your campaign coffer now that she actively fighting against the Community Roots expansion.

  2. Funny that the DOB didn’t care that they did not have the correct CofO for 26 years. Now that the neighborhood has changed, they all over the owner to get it legal. I can guarantee that if this business was in Bushwick they could operate as long as they wanted without a CofO. Selective enforcement, complaint driven – typical NYC enforcement.

  3. On the other hand, why is the DOB going after people like this when there are much more egregious violations throughout brooklyn??? I think we’ve seen a few massive LANDMARKED buildings in a very sorry AND DANGEROUS state of repair. And landlords in occupied buldings with hundreds of thousands of dollars of unpaid fines.

But Tish james is a jerk. Whatever happned with her lawsuit where she scraped her leg on that guy’s trailer hitch or whatever it was?????

  4. “DOB had shut down F+S Tires…because it didn’t have an appropriate Certificate of Occupancy and had racked up around $25,000 in fines.”

Gangsta! Convenient timing. I wonder when they started getting those fines, 26 months ago? That white flight was roundtrip like a muhfu…!

  5. This is total bullshit and Tish James has no business budding in.

If the facts of the story are correct, they own the building, it doesn’t have a proper C of O to operate the business there AND they have $24,000 in fines. F&%K THEM.

Besides, what’s the building worth now???

  6. How is gentrification to blame for not having a proper C of O or for racking up a bunch of fines? I can understand not being able to pay the fines because your business is marginal and rent has skyrocketed, but not how that causes you to violate DOB rules in the first place.
