jstireshop42011.jpgLast week Fort Greene-Clinton Hill Patch reported that the DOB had shut down F+S Tires, which has been on the corner of Fulton and South Oxford for 26 years, because it didn’t have an appropriate Certificate of Occupancy and had racked up around $25,000 in fines. Today Councilwoman Tish James sent out a press release saying saying she was in support of F+S’s owners, who “arrived before the recent renaissance” in the area and are now “struggling for survival amid specialty food shops, real estate offices and boutiques.” A hearing about the violations is scheduled for the middle of next month. 1. Tish James is wrong on this one but she is a politician who actually does her job, whether it was holding town hall meetings during the Clinton Hill crime spike or fighting against the Bloomberg 3rd term dictatorship as the Times, Christine Quinn (who showed her true nasty colors today) caved in.

Another reason why Quinn should never be mayor.

  2. Tish James is a moron. The only reason she’s in office is because her predecessor and victor (James Davis) was murdered. Once in office, she, like 99% of incumbents, continued to get re-elected on name alone. I look forward to the day that she’s term-limited. Damn relic.

    1) Thanks for bringing light to the 26yr campaign by the poor to rid them selves of this establishment and beautify the area. Your in-depth fort greene knowledge courtesy of Google Street view is of great service.

Now if we can just get swift justice on the boiler violations racked up by the check cashing place, African clothing store, and Barber shop – I’d say DOB enforcement dept can take a well deserved vacation.

    2) Get off of Daveinbedstuy’s dick please.

  4. In fact, this property has a CO dated Dec. 1, 1964 for use as multiple dwelling (5-family) AND 2 stores (Use Group 6, which encompasses a variety of retail and service uses) plus storage. I’d be curious to see DOB’s explanation for how current use violates the existing CO. The fines, it appears, are specifically related to FDNY inspections over a recent 6-month period (i.e., contestable, not long-standing, and curable). Obviously, much more to this story than what’s currently known. So unfortunate to see how many Brownstoner posters—including posters who crow about their own work without permits—jumped to fingerpointing and condemnation without knowing WTF they’re talking about.

  5. OMG…having lived in the Fort for over 25 years I used these guys alot for my bike as well as my car. Very good and nice people. But for the rest of Fort Greene…yeah it has changed but in so many ways really not for the better. Too much pretension…and what a bunch of know it alls. Glad to be out of there.

  6. I don’t condone wrongdoing either but I am sure they didn’t just notice they were operating illegally for 26 years. I agree with the above poster that this is a prime spot and someone has their eyes on it for a cafe or something.I hate when the city forces people out like that after they let them get away with violations for long but now want to enforce things cause the time is right.I was told how certain people operate when they want your property….whether it is to flip it or not. They go down to the municipal bldg and look up the property owner and whether there are any open violations or codes and then they bring it to certain officials’ attention to get the ball rolling.

  7. PS I am not anti-gentrification, I just want a few businesses that are useful for the neighborhood. How many wine shops do we need? How many more restaurants? A tire shop doesn’t discriminate, we all need our tires fixed (those with automobiles anyway). As for Tish James, yuck.
