On Thursday night Community Board 8 reviewed applications a few new liquor licenses, green-lighting two but not supporting another:
-The ixnay first: The Bearded Lady, a bar and restaurant, is seeking a full liquor license at 686A Washington Avenue, at St. Marks (pictured); although the application was supported by CB8’s Economic Development subcommittee, the board didn’t vote in favor of the license request. (12 were in favor, 7 weren’t, and there were 12 abstentions.) GMAP
-The board did vote in favor of a license for The Calf BK, an Australian restaurant planned for 611 Vanderbilt between Bergen and St. Marks. The restaurant will be small, seating 22 with another 10 at the bar. GMAP
-And, finally, the board also approved the liquor-license application for the much talked about ramen shop from old Morimoto chefs at 552 Vanderbilt, at Dean. The restaurant will be called Chuko, will seat 30, and have a bar for 10. GMAP

  1. Agreed that the former Kinky Krowns location would be a good spot for a new restaurant. Anyone know the story behind The Bearded Lady proposal–concept, owners’ track record, etc?

  2. Very funny that the Calf got the OK. Anyone who has been to one of the sister establishments in Manhattan can attest to the fact that they are pretty rowdy establishments.

  3. re: “It was odd…the permit was recommended for approval, … and yet it got a huge number of abstentions. (Which ultimately count as no’s.)”

Unfortunately this business was the very first one on the docket. It was pretty apparent that many board members who abstained did not understand that an “abstention” effectively counts as a “no”, until this was explained AFTER the first vote was held.

Hopefully they get approval. This is exactly the right type of business to come into the neighborhood.

  4. I don’t understand this at all. Washington needs restaurants and viable businesses much more than Vanderbilt, hence why it’s obvious that the economic subcommittee would vote in favor of the Bearded Lady. Hopefully they get approval at the next meeting. 686 Washington is the perfect location for a restaurant.

  5. Looks like that Brooklynian commenter attended the Economic Development / Permits meeting, where the liquor licenses are first heard and then a recommendation is made to the full board. So the sub-committee did not recommend ‘The Calf,’ but despite that, the full board approved it. Visa versa with the Bearded Lady.

  6. well_pHed,

It was odd…the permit was recommended for approval, there was very little discussion about the business itself at the board meeting before voting, and yet it got a huge number of abstentions. (Which ultimately count as no’s.) The would-be proprietors seemed pretty bummed but there is still a good chance they will be approved for a license by the SLA, without CB approval.

  7. emily, what was the reason the nay-sayers and the abstainers didn’t vote in favor of the bearded lady?

also, the calf seems to be part of a mini-chain of manhattan bar/restaurants: sunburnt calf, sunburnt cow, and bondi rd.
