A Sneak Peek at Mauzac
136 Dekalb Ave., nr. South Elliot Pl.; Fort Greene
Grub Street takes a first look at Mauzac, the new wine bar across from Fort Greene Park: “True to its name, the bar will offer a bubbly made with Mauzac grapes, as well as over 30 other varieties of wine… Also on offer: rotating platters ($7 to $12) of charcuterie by Her Cheese Shop, and an assortment of bite-size pizzas ($5) by Dufour Pastry Kitchens. The 25-seat space has exposed brick walls, an intimate nook, and a warm copper-coated bar.” Photo by Linnea Covington.

There’s a new bahn mi joint everywhere you turn nowadays, but according to Ligaya Mishan at the New York Times, the 10 varieties of Vietnamese sandwiches (all priced at $6.50) at Bed-Stuy’s Tigerlily really stand out: “Among the best are garlicky nem nuong (pork meatball), chicken caramelized in coconut juice, and improbably fiery tofu and mushrooms. All come on fresh baguettes, crackly outside and pillowy inside, easy to sink your teeth into.”
Red Hook Lobster Pound Adds 40 Seats
284 Van Brunt Street, between Verona Street and Visitation Place, Red Hook; (646) 326-7650
“Red Hook Lobster Pound, the popular crustacean-slinging shop on the Red Hook waterfront, is expanding its sit-down area by 40 seats in about two weeks,” writes Alex Van Buren for Fork in the Road. Sounds like a big improvement from the current seating options, which are limited to two benches out front. There won’t be table service, but there will be “reclaimed wood benches” and “a whole bunch of buoys” in the decor.

Ditch Plains Food Cart: Open on Thursdays
Brooklyn Bridge Park, Pier 1, 2 Old Fulton St at Furman St, Dumbo; (646) 613-2490
Time Out New York reveals that West Village seafood restaurant Ditch Plains has opened their food cart in Brooklyn Bridge Park: “For now, a limited menu including lobster rolls, mac-and-cheese-topped hot dogs and wraps is available on Thursday nights in conjunction with the park’s Movies with a View film series. A permanent concession stand, which will operate daily, is in the works for late summer.” Plus, TONY also reports that Strong Place, “a beer bar and American bistro,” has opened on Court Street. Stay tuned for more details…
Quick Bites
Liz de Guia of Food Curated (the woman behind that totally saucy Meat Hook film about sausage-making) has posted a video about the Red Hook food vendors… And NYS reports that Manhattan 3 Decker will be closed for renovations through August 23 or so.
I really want to love Tigerlily, but the service is painfully slow. I think it takes the very nice ladies about 10 minutes to make each sandwich. Do not go if time is an issue.
Tiger Lily is a nice place…I’ve had most of the sandwiches. Not the best bahn mi sandwiches, but good and the place is super clean.
