The Apple store issue—whether we’ll get one or not—seems to be playing a major role in the borough’s collective psyche. It’s like Brooklyn needs one to feel validated. Blogs are obsessed. Borough Prez Marty Markowitz made a video pleading with Steve Jobs. And now The Daily News has unearthed a rendering made to pitch the tech company on a specific location at the Municipal Building in Downtown Brooklyn. And why not? “It’s got the foot traffic. The building is iconic. The building’s gorgeous, and I think it would make for a beautiful location,” said Marty.

  1. Hipster Brooklyn would flock to this sucker in droves. Which is the point – an anchor up-market (price-wise at least!) business for the area which would drive more upgrades in retail there.

  2. Apple computers are still the best for any kind of graphic design work, high end video, etc.

The reason ordinary slobs like me use a Mac is because you never have pop-up and virus problems. Most people with a PC-based system have a major problem every year or so if they are doing a lot of surfing.

  3. I think the architecture of the Brooklyn Muni building is good although it has never been considered for landmark status. It is successful largely because it acts as a background building to the beautiful Borough Hall across the street. This alteration, in my view, would not damage the building aesthetically. On the contrary.
I am not condoning a cheap or stupid alteration, but rather a well thought-out design that would be in keeping with the neo-classic style of the building and with the retail character of Court Street.
What I am seeing in the rendering is not a bad beginning.

  4. 1st of all I find it interesting how easily the city and all the (generally anti-everything) frownstoners are willing to sacrifice the incredibly beautiful architecture of the Municipal Building for a retail store that can be found in scores of Malls across this country.

2nd – While Rob is an idot/flamethrower about a ton of things his anti-Apple stance is legitimate – because while an ipod/iphone is convenient, their lockdown, anti-competitive approach is dispicable – lucklily the open marketplace is not dead and in 10yrs they will be right back to where they started.

Finally, I dont know where many of you people live but the Brooklyn Brownstone belt is ground zero for Apples demographic and while I find it ridiculous that the city government would suggest dumping even more retail space into an over saturated market – there is no doubt in my mind that a store in and/or around downtown would do amazingly.

  5. bk veteran, I don’t understand your post. The city is inviting this. They created the rendering. I think that re-locating a couple of city offices and creating an income-producing commercial space in their place is a pretty smart idea.
Apple wants better? I cannot imagine a better location than this. They may not wish to come to Brooklyn at all, it may be too ethnic and “inner city” for them. But if they do, this would be a great location.
