As we predicted, the Baltic Green Giant is becoming a bike store. (Thanks to tipsters and Pardon Me for Asking for the heads up.) Rolling Orange opens this Saturday and will sell Dutch bikes, which are known for their sturdiness and large storage spaces in front. The picture to the right is a model they had in front of the store the other day. With the neighborhood’s new bike lanes, they should see some decent business, no?

I can’t imagine *all* of their bikes will be like the one picture above–I’m sure will be just more basic Dutch-style city bikes with baskets/racks. Nevertheless, even those can be really heavy and not at all practical for anyone who has to take them up and down stairs…
they scream LOOK AT ME EVERYONE LOOK AT ME!!! im sooo european! *squash, kerplop! boing!* (that’s the sound of a flattened marshmellow).

There’s a woman in my neighborhood with one — I see her periodically with her toddler in the front payload and/or groceries, etc. But I live in bucolic Victorian Faltbush, so she’s probably a fancy pants lady with a garage.
Again, though, great around the neighborhood where it’s flat. What about biking that 80 lbs piece of steel to the north side of the park?
I think those bikes would qualify as autos and would need insurance and resistration.
I wouldn’t let a tenant store that in the front garden area. Will it fit through a gate under a stoop???
Also, I’d never want to be seen on one.
I imagine those types of bikes would be a nightmare to ride around.
Amsterdam is a relatively flat city. The only hills are the bridges cross the canals. Where does someone store such a bike in space challenged brooklyn, outside?
those bikes are RIDICULOUS for driving around on busy city streets. i like the look of this storefront tho.

I like the *concept* of those bikes… but I don’t know how practical they really are. They are HEAVY and would have to have a parking spot in a front garden or underground parking. Also, I’m wondering about hills. Like, could I bike from Ditmas Park to Park Slope without bursting a blood vessel?
