As we predicted, the Baltic Green Giant is becoming a bike store. (Thanks to tipsters and Pardon Me for Asking for the heads up.) Rolling Orange opens this Saturday and will sell Dutch bikes, which are known for their sturdiness and large storage spaces in front. The picture to the right is a model they had in front of the store the other day. With the neighborhood’s new bike lanes, they should see some decent business, no?

Pete – Probably only about 300 a week. I seriously hope they have a money laundering business built into their operation.
how many bikes a week do you need to sell to pay the rent.
whatever, I am glad not a restaurant or bar.
Ummm, no, I’m sorry, but they look like the SUV of bicycles!
And, to me, this space will always be the location of the OT Offices.
The pix is not typical of normal Dutch-style bikes. Dutch bikes are meant to commute in fair weather and foul so have sealed chains, fenders, and so on. Obviously they are heavier than road bikes but road bikes don’t have fenders. Like other bikes, you get what you pay for and there is no reason a Dutch-style bike can’t have a light frame.
eh — I disagree.
My bike has only 1 gear. I just sold my old bike because I didn’t use it at all anymore. My single-gear (non-fixie) bike is VERY light weight, requires almost NO maintenance… and there’s no “tuning” for $75 ever.
Gears are great. They are very useful. However, if you are moderately in-shape (and trust me, I’m definitely no athlete!!!), a single-gear bike can be a great choice for Brooklyn. I actually found the big ol’ hill in Prospect Park *easier* with my single-gear bike! Lighter weight and better legs-to-wheel power. No energy is lost to the derailleur systems.
its 2010 a practical bike has gears.
Every time I read the phrase “Pardon Me For Asking” I want to vomit. How I pray for the day all of Carroll Gardens will be bulldozed to rubble and turned into a sewage treatment plant!
I agree… even though i think fixies are dangerous (hope your quads don’t get tired when that car stops short!), they are actually practical bikes that you can easily carry up to your 4th floor walk up. I don’t think you could even pick this cargo thing up.

well they do make a hell of a lot more sense than all those stupid fixed gear wannabe messengers…
not really
